Mille Cochin Info

Roosters on bantams are supposed to have small combs? I was just admiring mines pretty combs today. :( lol.

Heres some photos of my two bantam cochins. They were hatched a few days before July 1st. At the moment they are being segregated from the rest for being mean to the meat chickens. Other than being little brats I think they are gorgeous birds. :D

Gorgeous! My boys are such brats right now too! I had to pen them up in the run just to keep them from picking on my other roos and trying to gang up on my hens and even the ducks!! Teenagers....humph! HAHA!

How do you show when they are not considered a color yet ?

Here we have a class called AOV which stands for Any Other Variety i think. There you can show non standard colours.

Exactly. The only way to get them recognized is to show them. There is a certain number of birds/breeders needed for so many years to have a new variety accepted, but showing AOV is a good starting point.

Well I'm hoping to get started with this color. I have some egg laying hens but no projects and I love the breed and color ! So beautiful!
I may be gettin a frizzle hen and smooth hen as well as a smooth roo.

Never showed so how do shows work ?

Honestly, sorry for all the questions. I just really want I learn

Here is a helpful site for showing. It lists shows by area or date and even has tabs for bathing, ect... Most shows require a blood test before entering. Each state has different guidelines as to what they test for. I'm in PA, any show involving the state (4H, State Farm show) requires chickens to be tested for Avian Influenza and Pullorum. I've been to shows in other states that only require Pullorum. We are headed to a New York show this weekend and needed the AI and Pullorum. I would recommend going to a show first, talk to the exhibitors and see what it's all about and if it's something you'd like to do.

We are showing one of our MF Cochins and have entered her as Mille Fleur. She's not our best, she's the one my daughter uses for showmanship.

I read an interesting discussion among judges regarding nonstandard color entries. The general concensus was that nonstandard colors should be shown as whatever their color actually is as neither the APA nor ABA has a class AOV, Some local/regional shows may use an AOV class just to make the book keeping easier. Regardless, nonstandard colors do not compete above the Best of Variety level ie Best of Breed, Best Featherlegged, etc.

Also the acceptance process involves more than just having the birds shown. Both the APA and ABA websites have details of the process.
