I know you should aim for type first but have you tried a cockerel like this? Even though he doesn't show the best type, is it possible he might have something hidden away in his genes and possibly give you mille's that have type and color/ pattern? I've actually had this question on my mind lately since when I had golden laced my cockerel was horrible but I bread him to his sister who was a decent example of a hen and their chicks turned out quite nice. Xavier is amazing as always though.Get pattern, lose type. Breed for type, lose pattern. One day I will discover which of my birds can do both when bred together! I can get this pattern on a lot of my boys but they are not what I want to breed because the type is not there, except on my handsome Quincy and he is too dark. I mean this guy needs so much it is pitiful; head, back, comb, body width...... He is 5 months old but still, I can't see him coming together at all.And then I have daughters from Xavier, my F1 rooster that may not have pattern but type is lovely. I need to get a better photo of her. She is really nice.
This is the parents, Xavier and some of his ladies yesterday. Not all are pictured. They have a group of chicks I let them hatch for the second time this year. They enjoy raising their young.

Yes, I actually keep one boy like this back every year to cross with my MF/Mottled hens since thy are the typiest of all. I usually wind up selling all the youngsters because they are so bad with type, as well. I tried one time to cross with my pretty MF hens and wound up with some of the nicest colored ugly Cochins. People loved them but they did not want them for anything but yard candy.
I have a buff Columbian/MF hen I think I may cross this boy with, if he stays. I have my eye on some others, too. This is how I wound up having 8 breeding pens as I do not believe in putting more than one roo in a pen with girls. Just confuses the outcome. I like to know what produces what.
Feathering in quite odd colours!
