Mille Cochin Info

The top ones were from someone else's stock I just stuck some extra eggs in my bator! The bottom 3 are my first attempt at millies so we will see how they turn put! Ive never had them from hatch before so was unsure what to look for colour wise. Nigus is looking good types coming!

It seems that mille's will feather out just about any way. I have some that looks like yours but then some that are very different. I can' wait to see how they all mature.

Feathering in quite odd colours!

Yes, like Karen said, you can hatch 20 eggs and get 20 different chicks, (part of the draw for us). I've found that my chicks that hatch blonde end up a bit more calico in color.

Much of the difference in chick color comes from which e-allele the MF are based upon. Generally they are based on either wheaten (eWh) or brown (eb). The eWh based ones are creamy white with undertones and the eb ones are much darker. Mahagony can also increased the darkness.

any idea what the d'uccle is based upon? most of mine ar partridge based, so i'm thinking eb... but then I like the mahogany roo.

Plus i would imagine that there would be some chicks het on the e allele, giving even more variation. Add in enhancers and restrictors and i am not surprised at all the variations.

Sorry about all the questions. I'm wanting to get into this breed and color and planning to buy some from Rebecca. So is this color like in the standard? Is inbreeding ok? Too much white or too much brown a bigger problem ? Thanks !

no, the variety is not recognized yet. it is still a project variety so there are no givens...  you can breed the same hen and roo, hatch 20 eggs and get 20 unique chicks. LOL

until type and pattern are set and you can reproduce the parents in the offspring, it will probably continue being a project...

personally, I like them for the 'eye candy' effect more than anything else, though I am still trying to improve both color and type i'm working with as well.

Karen, here's your post I was referring to. :)

I have a memory like an elephant....except when it counts.
