#1 Ebay, isn't where I would search for a reputable breeder so please don't consider that a valid source. Many folks on there are just egg sellers and aren't concerned with breeding quality but, rather quantity. They see something take off (like MFC) and they run with it! ...muffs and all. LOL
#2 Many don't realize how easy it is to create MFC. There really is no need for d'uccle. It's actually a HUGE waste of time. The harsh remnants of d'uccle will be clearly visible for a good decade. By simply crossing mottled to buff columbian (both varieties can be found rather easily in the US) you will have decent colored birds in just a few years. Breed dark to light and you'll get there.
#3 Anyone who has any sense would do a tiny bit of research when starting their program and select the best stock available.. BUT, with MFC there has been this rush of folks purely interested in yard candy. They don't even want a roo.. just some cute speckled pullets with feathered feets to love on. This has caused the flood of proud pics of their backyard beauties that may not be up to snuff and sheds a negative light on the entire project.
Rodriguez, I am not against stirring the pot and think Im rather good at it myself .. it's just we've heard this song before and it hits a sour note to those who have spent much longer than a year and a half working on them. Split wing, split breast, squirrel tail are all things that need to be battled but breeding to other birds who are similar won't help. I suggest buying from a show breeder either some mottled or buff columbian and heal your flock. Or better yet, buy a pair of each and start fresh. That way there is no one to blame
Peppemint is so adorable!Well- Sunshine Roo and Peanut Butter are out to kill each other.
And I let Peppermint outside. I think I will pair her with Kipper for a friend right now.
And Tuba was quite interested in Peppermint!
Nancy- I "love" Macho. He is gorgous. i was wondering- who have you paired Inky with? It's been a while since you posted a pic of her.
Very cute!!! I did get them all seperated yesterday! I was so happy but some of them are henless.Country Boy, you really ought to keep your roos separate if they're fighting like that. ..just letting them duke is ok, I guess, if they find a pecking order and the fuss dies down but, sometimes you have those bad apples that never quit and they will beat up all the other roos. Im sure all those bloodies combs and waddles don't feel good and you may just find one dead.![]()
Rodriquez, yeah.. I looked back and saw you were dealing with the cocci bad and it sounded very similar to what I was going through. I spent some time chatting with Dr. Brown about it too. I think I may have had some sort of other bacteria growing as well. ..maybe even in my incubator because 4 day old chicks were dying and had white pasty diarrhea. so, now I disinfect everything after a few hatches. I hatch on paper towels and change them every time. About the MFC breeders... you will find all spectrums of quality. I know you breed good langshans (sp?) so Im sure you know you just have to look at the standard and do your homework on breeders. Cochins International website can direct you. I am a member of the club and have a breeders list too.. If I find it, I can help you track down someone local.
I outcrossed to blue mottled last year and kept a half dozen blue girls from that cross. They were all fluffy and cute but showed no signs of gold leakage. I only hatch a handful of girls that looked close to MF but, was excited to get them... considering my brooding problems last year. Here are a few of those girls.
I was very fortunate to come across these boys late fall so I bought them and crossed my original breeders from Cochinman2005 and the girls above to them
Here are a few of the mille colored chicks. It looks like I have a cockerel on the right and two pullets on the left.
The pullet in front has a lot of action going on.
I also have some black and blue mottled ones with a touch of gold leakage on the heads and backs.
and a couple of these guys below (don't know sex yet) but, they are bright blue..almost self blue looking. Can't wait to see how they turn out.
