so sorry for everyone's predator problems... I seem to have that under control for the most part (knock on wood)... MY problem is, I've had more birds killed by my blind horse in the last 6 months than predators have gotten in the same time period...
she moves so slowly and carefully, nobody sees her as a threat and they get stepped on. not intentionally or anything. the last two were both youngsters. a sfh pullet and my baby red cochin roo. I heard one squeak and look out and see a bird doing the broke-neck flop...
so in my case free ranging has it's additional dangers. the dog seems to warn off any predators for the most part during the day and before we go to bed. (standard poodle, not really official LGD, but he enjoys the 'job' when I can let him out to run around)
So, I finally got some new pics of half of the babies growing out. The other half are still in the brooder. The pics are not the best. I usually put them in the dog kennel for pics, but the turkeys are in there so I can't take pics of them in there.
Everyone:
The mostly black pullet all the way on top in the first pic and the one to the right, butt towards us, has the nicest type so far. I can't tell on the others because most of / all of their tails are gone. Darn tail eaters... That black pullet is either a Beakman daughter. Her mom would be one of Byron's daughters that run with the new cockerel from Erin. She has red hackle leakage.
I HAVE BREAST FLOWERS!
My second favorite. Darn that partridge "bleed through". She doesn't have that many breast flowers, but I need to start someplace, I guess.
Not my best cockerel - but his brother is about the same - just a bit more vermillion, more breast flowers and no floppy comb. For some reason Byron passed on a huge comb, so Junior is passing it on, too. I'll deal with that later. I am still trying to get Byron's type bred into the flock. Now that Erin has Byron back, I have to work with what I have.
My favorite - even if she does have to much white.
I forgot to get pics of the new cockerel that replaced Byron. He has amazing type so far. He's dark, though. I don't seem to have good luck with dark birds. But his cushion won me over.
Hopefully I'll have some cushions to look at in the next 4wks so I can start weeding out the ones I don't want to winter.
