Mille Cochin Info

Yeah I figure I'll change color every year. They're numbered consecutively so you just write down in your notebook the band # and any info on that chick.

I number a page starting at 100 (or whatever # you choose to start with) on the top line, then go down the page. If I have a hatch of 8 MF chicks I'll write down color first, then I'll leave a space for gender, I mark if it's a frizzle, and in the middle of the page I'll use a } and write which pen the egg came from, then at the end I'll put the hatch date. That's how I do it anyway.

That's a lot sipilar and easier than how I was doing it. Thanks. I will try it on these next chicks to hatch once I get the bands.;)

Karen, I love Kepiru.

Now, does anybody have a good way they keep records. I have some from this year but would like to have them easier and more organized. Any help would be great.
I wing band everyone (not that I can't tell them apart from looking) and for those breeds/birds that look a lot alike that I can't easily tell, then I use colored leg bands...

I keep everything recorded using MS Excel as well, with any updates, notes, parentage, etc. whatever info I think might be of use in the future. if I don't know the parentage, i'll list the source of eggs or pen they came from. especially useful when tracking markings of project birds, weights if you're working on size, flaws if you're working on type, whatever.

my sg dorkings are one such variety. I can tell pinky from the rest, but that's because her type and size is so much better than the others. and my own breeding to boot!

she got her name before she got her pink leg band. LOL but the other girls are orange, yellow, black, dark blue, green and white. then there's 1 girl who has none. haven't id'd my red cochins yet, or the 2 blue mottled girls, but everyone else I can tell apart. 4 red dorkings, all different shades of red, the ee's are all unique, as are the silver laced and the rest of the mottled pen, the sfh and the blrw...

if I start having problems, I'll pen the girls of any group separately for a week and collect/hatch from each one to see who's giving me the issues. (fertility, hatchability, survivability).

I'd contemplated trap nesting, but having a couple rows of cages in an enclosed area would be easier and use less space overall. especially if it's only for short term housing needs, such as egg collection, injuries, etc.

Nancy, I really must get eggs from you next year. Again, I know I am not a name synonymous with Milles but, with Erin's tutelage, you have what she's told me to look for in some areas. And I want frizzles. ;)

I have new pics of the new pens I built in my shed and of the 2 new cockerels from Erin. I will get them up tomorrow. I officially set up my first chocolate b.Orp x black b.Cochin pen today!
