wwmicasa1 here on byc has a few boys for sale and, I believe, Joshsbantams does too. Try pming one of them. They are both on page 1 or 2 of this thread.
Hello all. I posted earlier about getting in on this project but...no response...
Can I pout? lol!
Anyways.. I have two SQ mottled cochin bantam hens and a beautiful red cochin roo. I was wondering if that is a good start? I wanna make a go of it from scratch. If they are not what I need thats ok. I purchased a SQ mottled roo tonight to go with the hens if the red roo isn't what I need.
Also.. could someone explain what F1...F2 ect. means? I am kinda lost. I am assuming F1 is first generation, F2 is second generation and so on.

Many breeders have been working for years to get where they are today, but if you really want to start from scratch, most everyone started with Black Mottled on Buff Columbians. Msbear (see the post right above yours) here on BYC has an excellent history of the progress of MFC's from different breeders on her page - be sure and check it out. It's a must read.
But whatever color varieties you choose to start with, buy the best typed birds you can afford. It's easier to breed in color than it is to breed in good type once you've lost it, and especially difficult if you never had it to begin with.
And yes, you're correct with the generation progressions.
I think I may be on the right track with the Mottled hens I have, They are very typey. But their mottling is very heavy which it is suppose to be. I have read that supposedly that throws alot of white in the mix. So I was thinking using the red roo might help with that....maybe. His undercoat is a dark buffish color. Am I thinking correctly? I don't wanna mess it up right from the start!
Hmmmm... pictures would be helpful, huh?...lol I'll try getting some tomorrow!

You may want to go through this thread. It's pretty long, but has lots of useful info. It was the first Millie Cochin thread, and shows how some of the breeders got their start with this color. It's very informative. Good luck. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=106962
The red roo will be fine. I would love to see pics. They say to try and breed from undermarked mottled ..you are correct about that. But, you can tweak the color as you go... I would get some eggs in the bator then see where you are.. and what you need. You can purchase a buff columbian for future generations.
You guys are the best. One day and too much info to process!
I will start checking the site daily... this thread is exactly what i needed. I may get a roo from Lynn. I would love to grab one closer so we don't have to ship so far. Anyone close enough to drive....let me know and I will plan an adventure!
