I have 22 mille fleur cochin eggs, from my own flock, in the bator now, day 18. I also have a broody on about 8 eggs in the barn, she has been on for 8 days.
Can't wait to see how they turn out.

Hello everyone,
I have Mille Fleur bantam cochin eggs in my incubator that were given to me by a friend. She purchased a breeder pair at a poultry swap last year, she is not a breeder, just a chicken enthusiast. I am in Virginia, she purchased them at the Gilman's swap last year. I don't know what line(s) they are from. I grew up on a farm, but have never raised chickens for exhibition before, but my daughter and I are getting into it for her 4-H project. I would just like a starting point for the Mille Fleurs, what am I looking for/breeding for? What varieties have been used to create this variety? Thanks for any info.

I would start from the beginning of this thread and read through... Currently, mille fleur cochins are not a variety recognized by the American Poultry Association so, you'll have a tough time winning anything with them.. other than best of variety. To get them recognized, they must conform to the standard type wise which is our biggest hurdle right now. In VA, you are close to one of the best breeders of cochins in the country, Tom Roebuck... I would contact him (cochinman2005 here on BYC) and ask to purchase a buff columbian cochin pair. Breed your male to his female and your female to his male and then breed the offspring together... for a couple generations

until you get color back... then, breed them back again to get type back and back and fourth until you have proper type. See ya in 10 years

hahahahhaha seriously, though, if you're just looking for pretty birds for 4H, Im not sure you'll have any problems with them but, they are far from what APA standards would consider "show quality" There is lots of work to be done for us to get there.

BTW, Im in Sharpsburg, MD ..so, not too far

Just thought I would post a photo of my two little chicks that survived freezing in the egg by USPS!! They were shipped across country from Lynne in CA to me in MA.

Newdirection, they are very pretty. I have three from Lynn, that I hatched last year. I got two hens and a roo, lucky me!
I already had some from Ralph, so I have a nice flock now.
They are all laying well, had 22 in the incubator, one was clear early on. I have 20 chicks this morning. I will have some pics later.
