Mille Cochin Info

Katelyn, that pullet from you int hat pic, OMG I love her coloring but she's mean to the other pullets. The one in the pic with her tail to us w/ the funky color, she is a doll. The partridge based chick I got from you is getting a lot of white to her. She had to be taken out of the other grow out pen because they were terrorizing her to badly. She now mothers all my chicks. Really. She'd escape her tub and tub in with the younger babies. When I had other chicks hatch, she'd move the current babies she had under her and herself to the new tub and babies. She is going to be an amazing mom - she already is at only... what is she? 8wks?

I have some nice pullets, so I can't say I am totally lacking. Some need type help, but I was hoping to get a nice roo. Roos are usually a dime a dozen. I'm just not in a place to get them or they just aren't nice enough or old enough.

Lynne, that's for posting his picture! At least I know what to expect! It's not a bad color - he'd be nice with my dark girls. Now, hopefully he has the type.

Stinker! Put her in with some alpha hen for a day or two!
That's my favorite color, too!

The funky colored one has always been a doll - she loves to be held and petted.
A true lap chicken!

Aww - on the little girl!
I always keep a cochin in with my chicks!
They take right to mothering and everyone seems happier!

My last two hatches all have a lot of white to them (where she came from)
- they are all from the Mr. Red house!
Can't WAIT to see how they develop!!

I can never tell by hatch fuzz what they will feather out to
- and that even seems to change, sometimes drastically, at the juvie molt - ?? -
I guess that just makes it more fun!

Wish this came out bigger but this is what I have for my millie program millie pair , blue hen buff hen in one pen. will try and get better pic of the millie pair.

This is my "Renoir"...he looks similar to yours. I had high hopes for him, a few years ago, with his coloring (type was awful) but he didn't give me the chicks I was looking for......However, now it is a "moot" point as a Bobcat killed him last fall.

Lynne, he is gorgeous in his coloring! Reminds me of my Tristan that I had but he was killed by a hawk. Must be something in the color there. to make predators like them. All that flash, I suppose.

She was one of these very dark chicks

Wul, yeah....aren't you supposed to dump shavings on your head when you are doing chores? Doesn't everyone?

Okay, I am trying to keep up with your youngsters and their parents! LOL It is hard enough to keep up with mine and I have tagging systems and leg bands and records!
Ivan is handsome his own self, lots of loud color.

You go, girl! Keep on hatching as hard as you can! I am glad you don't let the winter stop you from hatching. It gets cold here but not like where you live. Besides, chicks brighten those long winter days and Gracie needs to have lots of pets!
I will be excited to see all your new hatches and kids growing up.

Oh my, I hope I can find one of my friends that has a red sport out of their Paint projects! That would be most excellent in my Sizzle project! I did not think it looked exactly like a Porcelain or a Calico Silkie so I had to ask. I have a friend that wants to give me a Paint Silkie in exchange for some of my tomatoes. Oh boy, what a great trade!

Here I've been doing it wrong all this time!

As long as I can shovel a path from the house to the garage to the coop, I'll be OK :) Chicks'll have plenty of heat lamps.

That would be a good trade

Thank you for sharing this photo of your beautiful mature girl and her baby photo.
I always like it when others prove you can hatch dark chicks and get MF grown chickens.
Getting hateful PMs from people that hatch dark chicks from my eggs saying they are upset with the color is annoying when they do not understand the genetics. It is a new hatched chicks and they expect MF coloring already! OMG! I really have only had that happen once but it was like talking to a brick wall because of the hatefulness.

Anyhow, the last few pages where everyone has shown photos of dark babies and grown beautiful MF Cochins is so wonderful and educational. It gives all of us more insight into what we are doing with our breeding programs.

I remember some heavy discussions years ago about what color the chicks should be hatching out to make MF and no matter what I said I was told it was most important that they be hatched out a certain color. Now years later, I notice that some of those breeders are no longer with us. Not sure if they are still working on this variety or gave it up but I have tried to stay focused and continue to work with what I am getting. I try to breed my best but also keep plenty of back up birds in case I lose something.

I must say, I love seeing everyone's hard work coming together.

Amy - I'm having a lot of success with those dark chicks, too!
mousey brown body and a reddish/tannish head

It's always a surprise how they feather out!!
Very exciting!
