Ok- Just got a 6 year old mini mare (Sue) with her 10 month old filly (Dolly)- Trouble is- I cant tell whether they are buckskin, dun or other??? The mom is almost white with a dark mane and tail and a stripe down her back- the filly is the same but more palomino color- here is a pic of mom (from prev. owner) last year in the summer and a pic of them both taken last week. Whatever the mom is-she has a dilute gene since she produced the "colored" filly-right? It is so hard to tell due to all the fur-any ideas? help....

They are both definitely Buckskins. The white in the mares mane is referred to as "frosting"... The black stripe down her back is called a dorsal stripe. Some but not all buckskins have them, as do duns. The fillys more golden buckskin color is likely just her coat growing out, as her photo shows some lighter hairs growing in her tummy area, so she will probably lighten up into a little version of mama. We had a filly once about that color, but after her first year she developed the frosting and her whole body lightened up considerably. From our buckskin mare x a black stallion. You'd have to know what papa & all grandparents were to guess at genes.
I think they're ADORABLE! Jealous!! Cute little ears!
Congrats!
