Hi
Not been on in a long while. Been having a pretty horrible 6 months.
Then today I decided to put the ducks away a bit early as very tired only to come upon a mink attacking them all. None were dead but all 5 badly hurt, he even tried to attack me. Horrible horrible experience, and unfortunately the mink is still alive
Rushed my ducks to the vet but as I feared my little crested cahunga (sp?) has to be put to sleep. Right now the other 4 have at best a 50/50 chance but vet felt worth trying, I have many wounds to bath and spray and antibiotics for 7 days.. Thankfully I still had the old small duck house in their run for storing bedding so I managed to herd them in there while the mink was held in their other house by a friend, so they are now in the little house locked up tight in a big stable with a big deep soft hay bed...
Please cross everything I can get them through this... Spaghetti and pea breakfast for them all... (Their favourite)
And cross some more that I can get the mink, now he knows where they are I don't see how I can possibly put them back out of lock down while that mink is loose... I don't know what 'll do.. Might have to rehome them... All my neighbours ducks within miles are gone in the last few months to mink, I did think mine were safe :(
Gutted, in shock, angry and very upset wack wack mom... Rip my little fuzzy duck

I'm so sorry about your ducks. That is a really sad story. Is theire anyway that animal control could get involved in this case. It seems only apropriate after a lot of loss. If you need someone to talk to about puting a duck down I'm here. I had 2 ducklings and one was born with a heart tumor I didn't know this till a week ago and took it to the vet were it had to be put down. It was really sad. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I hope the best for you and your ducks.

Horrible horrible horrible. Been home from vets 4 hours now and still shaking...
Hopefully will have a trap tomorrow but the thought of owing anywhere near him scares me! I never knew a wild animal to try several times to attack humans... Horrible.. I had to kick him a few times to stop him coming at me agin and again, and even at that he still kept chasing the ducks.. Fast too.. I love animals and I know it's nature, but just evil..
Mink are not native to ireland, they have been imported from America to farm for fur, which I think is awful, then escaped and multiplied.. Now seriously damaging wildlife populations..

Now I need a mink proof duck enclosure... Some how.. By Friday..

Thanks.
They have a huge house but I keep that inside a huge run that is double fenced with tiny hole wire and black ground mesh that i basically fixed to the fence posts, with netting all the way over the top. But the rats must have Mae a hole I didn't see, I don't know how the mink got in but that's my only guess..
I never let them free range as I am near but not beside a river and I have a farm and foxes live here too.. But their run is very big, they fly around inside it.
It's that I need to mink proof, but from what I can see the only way to truly do that is concrete floor, block walls and glass & roof.. Try they are not happy ducks who are used to foraging all day long..

So sorry. Is it possible that the mink has rabies? I don't know much about them, but the behavior seems odd.

I doubt it, he was just cornered sort of, as he was in the duck run, and I think he was a bit frustrated as my ducks did put up a serious fight! Apparently if they feel cornered they will attack anyone, however when he went for me I had just come in the gate and he was trying to get me by surprise.. Evil!
