Minnesota!

Rhetts, sorry to read of your losses. It is infuriating. A few years back I had an elevated pen with a trio of bantams and came out one morning to find it flipped over. One pullet in the yard ok, one missing completely and just the wings of the rooster as evidence of his existence.
I could tell a bear did it from hair I found. I made calls to the DNR offices on Rice Lake Rd and Cloquet about a nuisance bear problem and these several years later am still waiting for someone to at least call back. As you might guess I am not a fan of any government agency or employee. In general terms they are under worked and over paid.
So I spent two nights in my truck parked near my coops with rifle ready, and that SOB would not come back.
About a year later a bear broke the glass in the window on one of my coops. He did not go in or tear anything up. He must have cut his paw badly based on blood he left and that quite likely discouraged him. I now have hardware cloth over all windows.
Get the men folk to set up armed watch at night and perhaps those varmints will get a welcome they will not soon forget. Or better yet a decent burial.

I am so sorry Rhetts. That completely blows.

#1.Reinforcement on the coops. Buy Boards. Build a coop that is Fort Knox. If there is no reward they should not be back.

#2 Auto motion detector light on the coops. When The deer walk by when the wolves scratch the door on the coops that light flicks on like a front porch light to scare them. $20 at Walmart. Takes 2 D batteries and it works in -25F. I have one and I love it. Only problem is windy nights with leaves flying about it comes on ALOT.

#3 Baby Monitor placed in the coop and in your room so you can hear any racquet in the middle of the night and get up and harrass them back. your Choice and your Secret on how that harrassment happens.

Depending on your nature for dealing with wild critters you can pick any of the above according to what your heart and head tell you do.

Yesterday I was doing dishes and 10 feet from my kitchen window a wolf ran in to a circle of hens. He got 2. Ran off with one in his mouth while I was yelling. I gotta tell you, all day while I was out and about outside I felt jumpy. I guess the chickens will stay in the pen, not that it provides much protection. I made a delicious bread pudding to try to ease my stress and sadness. It was really tasty, but I'd rather have my chickens back. I'm not looking forward to having them picked off one by one.

Ralphie-for the most part I did not have a bee problem at the feeders. I purchased ones this year that are supposed to be bee proof. I did have some a few weeks back but I moved it and the bees didn't find it yet. I think I will fill mine one more time and that will be it.

I have some very sad news! We had a predator attack last night. It tore into one of my duck coops. Took 7 of the 9 ducks. I found 2 piles of feathers, so they at least ate 2 of the birds here on property. There are no signs of the others. 2 of the ducks somehow managed to escape. We found them in the yard this morning. To be frank, we are quite devastated. The prints we found are canine. DH and BIL are thinking wolf. I took pictures. They are huge in my opinion. There were at least 2 animals because there are 2 for sure different sizes of prints. There are scratch marks on the other duck house but it had not been broken into. There are prints around that duck house and on my driveway. It is a half loop type and it comes very close to my house. That means these animals are right out my door. *sigh* Now what?!
How do I save the other animals from these predators? What am I supposed to do? I have coop of juvie chickens in my yard that I am surprised they did not take those either. The chickens would have been easier. I am assuming they are next. I just really don't know what to do! What about the free ranged animals, the geese and turkeys? Are my pigs and cows safe? What about us? Can we go outside and not have to worry about wolves?

I have a game camera set up on the duck house that was intact still. I am assuming they are coming back for them because of how many tracks and they tried getting in there already.
Any other suggestions?
sorry to hear this...
