Minnesota!

My understanding is that all the euthanized birds were piled in their bedding and then covered with a spray foam to seal them up while they composted. The compost them would eventually be spread on fields I believe. I'm not sure if that is very effective or not but maybe.

That is why I agree though that doing things to discourage wild bird visits are in your best interest

That may be what they did with some, but not all of them. People who live in those infected areas can tell you.

Hi @gofeedthegirls. You sound busy and enjoying the harvest too. Post some pics of those sun flower fields. My mom has some friends up that way that raise sunflowers. Dave and Marge Bakke ( I think that's the spelling) they have retired and have the kids doing it now. But I have memories of those fields. Gorgeous.

I think I have heard the name. There are a few bakke's around here. I could snap some pics but they are anything but pretty now haha

About AI,

I am not going to do anything different. It is impossible and cost prohibitive to eliminate all the wild birds and sparrows from my coops. I am not stopping free ranging, I think that is the exact wrong thing to do. I will let my birds out daily through the winter. Except for breeding season when I want to keep the lines pure.

A bird flying overhead, could poop and I step in it and bring it in my coop. Then I have a nasty virus locked inside a coop with a higher concentration per sq ft than if they were outside.

The other thing to remember it was not the small outdoor flocks that had the problem, it was the HUGE commercial operations with birds in close proximity day and an out.

I will also practice hope and prayers.

I know some will be appalled by my lack of actions. I consider feeding my wild birds a quality of life thing for me. I am not going to stop it, If I do most of those birds would find a way to my feeders. I would rather have them at my window on the far side of the house from the coops, than eating in the coops.

This does not mean I am not worried at all, I am just not going to over react and attempt actions that are bound to fail anyways. If there is t be a natural immunity it will come from a free ranging flock, IMHO. Yes, they I like my Chickens, turkeys and even guineas, but if I had to put them all done it would tick me off, but would not be the end of the world. If a vaccine becomes available I would be first in line for it.

There you have it, I am irresponsible.

I spent a year in TRF way back in 1970 going to school there, I knew a Bakke kid, my age, but I will be darned if I can remember his first name. As I recall he refused to drink beer with the rest of us.

Yeah... I really don't think there is a right or wrong answers here. All we can do is try our best to keep our flock happy and healthy and hope the AI stays away.

I can understand MCM doing what she is doing though with her developed breed lines. If my flock was lost to AI it would be emotionally taxing but not break my wallet.
