OK, I plan to go to Chisago on Saturday. Maybe I can find a home for Big Blue (gorgeous big Blue Orp roo) or find him a few girls.

Now that I am moved, maybe I can start thinking about a get-together. What a crazy Summer this has been.

We're in Duluth--Lakewood Township to be specific...I went to High School in Chisago Lakes--funny there's so many of us on here

DH is from Litchfield, also farming country...his family raises meat chickens, but this is our first attempt with egg layers.

Anyone with advice for a newbie on dealing with Minnesota winters and chickens? We have a large coop and we have been opening their little door when its not too cold and letting them decide if they want to come out or not. Do you have covered or sheltered runs? How warm should it be in the coop? So many questions...

First pick your breeds. My sussex I have to shoo into the coop at night even this time of year! They love it outside! Ventilation is very important in your coop. An escape for the moist air up high so as not to create a draft. I wouldn't recommend covering or sheltering your runs other than natural sheltering ie shrubs/trees. With the snow here anything I would try to put up I know would just end up accumulating too much snow and destroying the run I had! I only turn on heat lamps if the lows are forecast to be 10* or lower and they all seem to do fine.

Hello all! I'm new! My husband and I have been thinking about getting some chickens. We'd like to start out with some layers, and perhaps get some meat chickens at some point.

We have NO idea how to care for chickens, so we've decided to get as MUCH info and advice as possible before taking the plunge. We're going to be building a coop and run off our barn this spring.

Glad to see there are so many minnesotans on here. What kind of chickens does everybody have?
