Minnesota!

Welcome @jdk77
adorable pics of those kids and their birds.  And I love your white coop there in the background too.

Holm I hope you're not hurtin' too bad from  your shots today.  My DD despises them.  I have to settle her down a bit before she gets them.  But if you liked shots we'd think you were crazy... LOL.

Ralphie I wish I could come over and help you figure out the Whiz bang.  Looks like you can't sell one outlaw guinea to jdk77 either...

Today I had to take a detour due to road construction on the way to work.  I know a secret little dirt path/drive way--single lane through the woods that thank goodness only one other guy knew about.  He had backed himself up into a drive way for me to pass.  It sure was gorgeous back there clambering through the woods.  There's some gnarly points in the road though.  Pretty much just a 4 wheeler path.  But I do like a little adventure.  Otherwise It would have been 20-30 miles on the other two detours.

I went adventuring on another thread yesterday and there was some entanglement with a couple of people...with high opinions of their winter set ups.  I'm sure glad that everybody is nice on here.  It's really hard for people to  understand that where they live, even though they get a little snow, that their way of doing things is not always the way all wintering should be done.  Nobody ever reads through the threads either I'm thinking.  I have to admit after they get a certain length it's daunting to pick through for the good details. jdk77 you've picked a nice place to land for chit chat and seeking advice and acceptance for what you have.

Nope. No outlaw Guineas for me! Thank you for the warm welcomes! I appreciate it. I have had chickens off and on for some time. I had them when I lived out by Walcott Nd, then when we lived in Iowa and again now. When ever I have googled any chicken question a ton of back yard chickens things have popped up, so I decided it is time to join. I have read through some threads and have definitely seen some disagreements. Funny how some people get that way.

One of these things is not like the other...

Chicken conditioning is coming along nicely. This is Gloria, Petunia, and RedChicken

Also, Big Buck and Conrad finally 'had words' today. they have been pretty good about giving eachother space but this afternoon i heard the sound of what i surely thought was one of my hens getting drug into the corn field by a predator. Nope... it was conrad and buck sparring in the corn a few rows in! somebody must have been talking to the other one's girl!

arrggg...having major problems posting...

Well today went better then i thought.. all 8 girls were alive and NOT bloody when i opened the coop this morning...Only had 1 feather flying 4 on 1 fight but the new girl ended up on top...she did get several feathers plucked and little blood spots where they were pulled out but since the 4 that jumped here got the bad end of it and ended up hiding in a corner I decided to let her enjoy her victory and left her in the run with them.. she had no problem getting food and water after that...no problems for the rest of the day and they are all on the roost together... fingers xx`ed for tomorrow....

welcome jdk, love the pic with the little girl holding the big fat ducks!

I worked from home today so instead of 2 hour friday weekend commute got to stroll outside and work on the woodshed. It is pretty darn near finished, just have to cut a few boards for side walls/slats. Now to get firewood...

I was late getting the girls locked up. I've had the quail for almost two weeks now, and for the last 10 days they have consistently been going in the coop at dusk on their own. TOnight though, maybe it was the moon, they were piled up in the moonlight in the run. I don't feel it is totally predator proof because you could dig under on two sides. So, I know those quail are skittish to put it mildly.

I hung a flashlight inside the coop so there was light. I had on chore clothes, so crawled on hands and knees into the pen, closed the door behind me, talking softly, moving slow....but flushed the quail. total mayhem. They flush straight up in the air, and it was chaos and one hit the door, and .....away he went. I did my best to look but they are smaller than a grapefruit and have the best camoflage.

Maybe he will hear the others and come back in the morning, but then....how would he get in the run? I have to leave for duluth around 11 am. I might have had to cull a male come spring ....but I am feeling pretty sorry right now.

The chickens are getting a little fed up with all the attention going to the quails. Everyone is healthy, molting.....and little seaquist has taken to mounting half the flock. Not sure what she's thinking....

Scandiafowl, Did your buff orp come back this morning?
