Minnesota!

The girls are off to the races!

Big sorry for your losses Ralphie.

Back to hardware stores. My favorites are the ones in the middle of nowhere. You always find something there you won't find anywhere else.

Hey Six Sexy Chicks. Welcome!!! What part of Minnesota are you from?

While I appreciate the thoughts, I do not need condolences when I lose a bird. These are not pets, so while I do not want to lose them or see them suffer. I feel guilty getting a condolence for a bird or two I feel no emotional loss over. I hope that does not seem rude. I just felt guilty getting a condolence over something I am not attached too.

On these two it was the way they died that Ticked me off and made it "newsworthy".

If I lose a named bird, I will tell you and gladly except condolences. thanks

I have 1 more creamette rooster to get rid of. I will not get rid of that one for a couple months yet, I want to watch the tails and combs before I choose, One is young and looks like he will have a nice comb if his tail is not too upright. I separated Creamette hens and roosters today. I have 10 hens for next spring. Hopefully 8 will make it. I have one to cull.

Here is the first step in reintegration process. They were all one flock before, so hopefully it will go fast and easy.

I call this Creamettes in a Box! 2 of these go to Aussiegal and lala,

ok, I'm looking at the pic wondering about the concrete pad with the diamond pattern.....and then finally realized it is the netting or fencing the pic is taken through. duh!

Whew, Ralphie, it worked out great not to do rooster tonight, although I am really excited. With the frost coming, I had to do the last bit of harvesting (green beans, basil, ground cherries, grapes, raspberries, zukes). Still in the garden is kale - I don't eat that til after frost, tomatoes - too many this year and even the chickens are turning their beaks up at the - pie pumpkin, some kind of unknown squash, potatoes and brussel sprouts.

Whenever the frost shows up, it will be the latest frost I've ever had here.

Sometimes rough eggs just happen. Sometimes they are a symptom of IB. Because those are pullets, I vote "just happens", assuming your chickens have not had runny noses and eyes.

I think I get redneck points for salvaging some wood from crates from a new heating system for the building where I work. Really heavy wood, think it is oak, for very solid crates. I wish I had the truck with me, as I could only take what had already been pried apart. I was tempted to call my daughter and get her husband out there with his pickup, but....Anyway, people in the building kept asking me "what are you doing?". I'm thinking, hey, free wood. You just never know when you need it, and worst case scenario is bonfire wood. But this was good stuff, not the lightweight pine stuff.

So not redneck!

You are going to have to figure out get extra points to get back on the redneck list.

If you saw the people we play with... Let's say It is more of a beer league for some teams.

I shot a rabbit from my back stoop last night and skun it while DW waited with dinner on the table. That has got to count for something!

I've never had rabbit, but you and minnichickmama make it sound tasty!

hardware stores - in pine city there is Sausers, 100 years plus. The basement , which is storage, is amazing. If you are looking for something unpopular someone might take you down to look at stuff. Has a creaky wooden floor.

In new brighton, there is beiswingers....think they are a 100 plus too, but they moved into a new building maybe -10 years ago. They also used to have the creaky wooden floors.

Should that not be a prerequisite for a hardware store?

I live in Howard Lake Mn. I am new to this site.

My Granddaughter named all 7 of them.

Beautiful girls!
Sorry to hear of your losses Ralphie... I hate people like that, the 'slob hunters' who kill for no reason. What a prime example of the poor state of humanity we are in.
We used to live by the refuge as well, I dispise "slob hunters!" ruin it for everyone.

I'm from Minnesota. Brand New to this chicken thing. I think one of my herbs is egg bound. Can anyone help?

What are her symptoms?
I would try a warm bath in epsom salts, then blow dry. give her some oyester shell, mix it in yogurt or mash if you have to, lube the vent with ky jelly or olive oil ... you can also give her one crushed up TUMs. if she is eggbound, she should lay within a couple hours,

.......trying to get through all the posts.

Why aren't you folks outside enjoying this perfect weather?

I heard when they did move, they found dynamite in the basement, as they used to sell it for stump removal. had to bring in the bomb squad to remove it and take it away, didn't know how stable it was after so many years.

Nothing new really to post, did get my drain tile in around my coop this weekend (hense why i haven't been on). also had to build a 2 ft x 2 ft french drain or would have had to dig a 20 foot long thrench and keep going, lesser of two evils. But as my coop is on the downward side of a hill, and I didn't want anymore rivers running through it, it had to be done. Hope all my big projects are done out there, but have a list of small projects still, it is never ending, I love it!

I mentioned that last weekend I met MCM to get some Cornish girls from her. They went through pseudo quarantine in a chicken tractor next to the coop the would be moving too so they could meet the flock in protection. Well tonight was moving night! After the lights shut down for the night and everyone was snoring, I snuck the Cornish gals onto the roosts and tucked them between the resident chickens. This should quickly integrate them to the flick.
This was the first time i have really handled them and I am really impressed with the density of their breasts. They are much firmer and fuller than the rainbows and i think that it is going to be a good cross.
I am excited for my first home breeding 'experiment' (I feel a little bad calling it that) but it will be a good learning experience and a chance to share with all of you!
