My little Cochin broody.

Ok... so chicken story time!

i went out for lockdown tonight after I got home from youth group at church. the light were already off in my coops and all the hens were roosting so i thought i would do head count for the first time in a while. usually at lock up they are still milling around and eating with the lights still on now adays. so i counted heads and came up short by one. i recounted several times, continuing to hit just 32 girls. i was very sad and started counting by breeds and confirmed i was 1 RIR short in that coop. i did a quick hunt around the coop and the corn crib to make sure she didnt just roost outside. no luck. i was pretty sad.

I stopped into the other coop for lockdown and head count to make sure i wasn't missing any more girls. Turns out i was +1 RIR hen in that coop :) she defected from Buck's gang to Conrad's crew

what a relief and a good chuckle. i will be doing more head counts to see if i can tell if this is a permanent move or not.
yeah, head counts....I can't imagine tryng to count 32. It usually takes me a couple of tries to come up with 19. Tonight, after I bring the new girls home, I should count 25.

Still undecided about exactly what I will do when I arrive home after dark with the new girls. Really really would prefer to be home in daylight with them. I can leave them in the kennels, and deal with them in the morning. I can take half the girls in the coop and move them to the other side on the roosts, and then put the new girls on the roosts in that now empty side of the coop. I can put the new pullets on unused roosts in the most popular side of the coop.

Took friday off to deal with them, so plan on being up before daylight to be out in the coop to see what happens.

(and yes, I should quarantine, and no, it won't happen).

We have a timer set to light at 0600 and shut off at 2100. My mother goes out in the morning when the sun is up and opens the chicken hatch but leaves them in the pen. Some defy Mother Nature and hang out outside all day, others prefer the warmth of the coop.
It's nice in there, I was able to work with just a tshirt on.

Although it's cooler out seeing stars in the sky lifted my spirits!

As long as you're not quarantining them and you'll be home tomorrow, I would just put them on a roost next to the other ones and go out early and see what happens. I wouldn't recommend this with just 1 or 2 hens but with 6 I think there might be too many for any one in particular to get picked on. I don't know for sure if that will work but I think that's what I would do.

I tried to pick an egg from under a barred hen this morning and she growled and pecked me like a psycho broody haha.

I guess she was enjoying the warmth of the nest box

I didn't realize that Cochins are a broody breed.

What I'm wondering is if I should separate her from the flock. She is one of two bantys and has leaned to keep on the sidelines. She doesn't get picked on like the SF but have witnessed larger roosters attempt to mate with her. If the eggs are fertile ... All bets are off.

I'm kind of tempted to go that route. I have had good luck integrating groups of hens for the reasons you give...
