Minnesota!

We have the unexpected baby goat!  Its been quite a learning exoerience and it is still touch and go with the little one.  I do not recommend having a baby goat this time a year!

I told DW about your surprise goat and the sweater made from the arm of a sweatshirt and she didn't believe it at first. I had to show her the photos!

Just so you guys know, DW has dubbed you guys my 'chicken friends' :) she said something the other day like 'I wish I had chicken friends...' And I about fell over laughing :)

Anybody getting this tonight? iPhone and laptop both

This poor girl I'm not sure what to do about her first it was her ears and now it's her eyes. I noticed yesterday she was scratching her eyes quite a bit. Then today when I was giving them mealworms I noticed how bad her eyes were. So after they all went to roost I went and got her and brought her back into the bathroom and gave her some leftover antibiotics that I had from my dog when she had her teeth pulled. I figured the dosage should be the same since my dog only weighs 4 1/2 lbs. I hope this works otherwise I might have to put her to sleep permanently. I would hate to do that because she has always been my favorite one since the day I got them. She seems to be the only one that ever has any problems. Right eye left eye antibiotics that I gave her
Okay, I think you have a mite problem that is causing this and was the cause of the ear issue. Did you clean it with a warm, wet cloth? I would start with that. I would then recommend getting something calle terramycin and rub it in and around her eyes. It is a optic antibiotic, and it runs around $20 for a little tube. The stuff you gave her might help with infection, but if I am right on the mites, then it is time to treat all the birds with something for that. Frontline is a very popular treatment for external parasites with breeders/exhibitors these days. It is the dog stuff, you can get a little cheaper brand of the same thing called Sentry from Fleet Farm. Each bird gets a couple of drops on their shoulders, just like a dog, and directly on the skin. I was told to do this once in Spring and once in the fall to keep bugs off them. If they are bothering her ears then they may be bothering the eyes and causing the hen to scratch her eyes and shake her head. The poor thing though. I feel bad for birds who just attract these things.
I should ask though, have you put anything in the coop or run like Sevin Dust or any other pesticide type thing? If so, this could be a reaction to it, though I am pretty sure the mites are the issue.
Make sure if she is laying that you toss the eggs for a couple of weeks at least. The problem with giving antibiotics not labeled for chickens is that you can't be sure about the egg withdrawal period for them.
Also monitor her breathing and any sign of nasal drainage, but this seems to be limited to effecting her eyes only.

I just gave her the put on a month ago. Should I be giving this to her more often. None of the other girls seem affected. I could change the bedding again and try to go with something other then straw. But when I tried pine shavings they didn't seem to care for it as much as the straw. But I will try again and they will have to just get use to it...
