Minnesota!

What a nice way to start the day catching up with y'all - baby goats, roosting pullets, knitting, getting chores done.....getting ready for T-day.

Got home in the dark last night and Ta-Dah! every single chicken was in the coop all snuggled in and roosting. So the work this weekend with getting them up the ramp and in the coop was worth it. I think I got three eggs from the 6 new pullets, and 2 from my regular flock.

century link has messed up their internet again, so there is no internet which means no cell service and no byc at my house. I hate hate hate their customer service, which consists of absolutely no help whatsoever. I called this morning when I got close enough to town to get cell service, and after a very long voice mail maze got the "sorry, our offices are closed but visit our website" And wouldn't you think they would know enough to then tell you what the heck their office hours are??

My only other option is to get a satellite dish to pull in the internet, which is still a bit spotty where I am.

Have a great day everyone!

Got the new Meyer's catalog in the mail today! Not that I would get hatchery chicks again after hatching some of Minnie's eggs, but I just like to read about all the different breeds and look at the pictures. Well low and behold, they have Buff Ducks!! And their minimum order is 3!!

Somebody PLEASE talk some sense in to me!!

I think I might get ducks again in the spring, so I hear ya! I love Khaki Campbells!

DH just shakes his head at me.

Walhart or Wally is getting bigger and braver. Last week, we weren't sure he was going to make it because he wasn't eating and we couldn't get him to take the bottle. We gave him a vitamin shot (BoSe) and finally on Friday he started to eat again. Mom is young and impatient with nursing him, so he doesn't get much before she moves away from him. He needs a new little sweatshirt coat, because he is growing out of this one. He is 2 weeks old today!
Soooooo cuuuute!!!

He's bustin' outta his little vest!

Today's progress does not look very good of course it has only been two day on the anabiotic's. I gave her the medication this morning and put a warm moist rag over her eyes. Her right eye is completely sealed shut and Harden. And she keeps yawning like she is trying to breath or pop her eardrums. She has no wheezing or coughing or sneezing iand nothing is draining from her nose her breath smells fine and the roof of her mouth looks clear and has a nice creamy peach color. I know I should probably cull her that would probably be the most humane thing to do. So why can't I do it.. I think just make it through today and see how it goes..

Cute name! How nice to have a group of ladies to hang out with each week!

I wish I could go every week, but I have missed the last 3. It was nice just to relax and not think about everything else I have going on.
We've been bringing momma to the milking stand and let him nurse there. We have to hold her back legs so she doesn't keep moving around. I can tell that he has gained weight since Friday. We will keep working on momma!
Sounds like when we had a 'kicker' first time heifer and had to try milking her. I can't say as I blame them, remember when I had my first one and the agony on went through with nursing him.

Our record egg collection today - 15 !

With 31 hens.. The Jerseys aren't laying yet, the Bresse and baby BO either (duh).

Still am not getting Beatrice off the ceramic eggs. A snowfall may cool her off..
Those larger breeds, I find, tend to start later than other breeds, especially the JGs.

I have been working every day so I have not have had a chance to do outdoor work. Good thing I don't have a lot of it.

The DW has a group that does a stitch and ***** as well. It was actually yesterday too and she had to miss it yesterday because we are all getting ready fo turkey day.
I am going to do a brine. First time with a turkey. It will be a lot more than just salt.

We don't really b**** except when we got talking about getting mammograms and how there should be an equally painful test for men to have to endure.
Salt is most important, but I know Ralphie said he always adds sugar too. I prefer to do all my poultry with a minimum 24-hour brine if cooking whole. If you run short on time to do brining though, a salt rub all over inside and out works pretty well too.
I still haven't decided if we are having turkey this week or not. I suppose I should decide quick though since I will need to pull it from the freezer today if I do. LOL

I gotta admit that even though it was a relief to not have the ducks this year, I did miss them. I am thinking I will do Khakis next year, if for no other reason, to have eggs in the fall when the chickens stop laying during molt.

For the last month, all I have gotten are pullet and Silkie eggs. I get anywhere from 6-12 a day. Then this last weekend an olive colored egg started showing up in a pullet pen. She is a pretty little thing too that is laying them, all black, bearded, feather footed too. I think she is out of the Marans hen I have. I think her penmate is a Minorca cross with Ameraucana too now that they have grown out, the body shape is wrong for a pure Ameraucana. I don't care, they are the only two EEs I have from this year then.

I noticed this week that one of my Dark Cornish hens is getting ready to molt. That nitwit. With those you can tell because the black pattern starts fading out of their feathers just before they start dropping feathers. When everyone else in that pen molted, I kept noticing how gorgeous she was, but now I know why :/ I may have to make an exception about a heat lamp for her. They aren't quite as winter hardy as other breeds with their clothes on, and to molt now, well..... and of course, due to Murphy's Law, it IS my best hen of that breed.

I got my grocery shopping done this morning. Realized I should have started cleaning the coffee pot before I left (I use half water, half vinegar). So, I am waiting on that to finish so I can have my coffee and head out. It was 27 this morning when I went to town just before 8:00. It is warming up fairly well though. Maybe I can get the pens all fixed up today and get a few cleaned too, I hope. My Buckeyes need to get in out of the pasture so I can start seeing some eggs from those soon.

You all have a lovely day. Enjoy the sunshine and making your holiday preps!

I am sorry, Coffee, I think you are right. There may be some internal problem going on that you just aren't going to be able to solve for her. I have never seen one start doing that and recover. The eye thing is very odd to me though. Sometimes you just don't get answers either. But whatever you decide, we all know you are doing the best for her and your birds that you can.

One of my EE's from you is black, bearded and feather footed too. Do you think she might lay an olive egg?? Ooooh, that would be so neat! They were checking out the nests this morning while one of my RSL's was in there, so maybe it will happen soon.

I've got one hen left to molt and she just started dropping a bunch of feathers in the last couple of days. My SLW seems like she should be done dropping feathers by now, she's been molting for what seems like weeks but she still dropping some too. She's much farther along though with the new growth. Hopefully it will stay somewhat mild until they all get through it.
