My coop is too small to go into. All the square footage is made to give the chickens room to roam. I can't fit.

I have Goldie in a wire kennel in my bathroom. It is an awkward place for her to be, blocks my main utility closet. So I thought I would see if she could tolerate the cats, if so I could move her into the living area. Then she also would not be stuck alone in this silent room. But, as soon as one cat came in, Goldie flipped. THis was even though I had one end of the cage and side all covered in blankets so she had a dark, enclosed area to be in.

Darn.

Also, she is walking more. Before, just a small step, wait, small step. Now, 2-3 steps in a row.
But here is my question - she is high stepping - bringing her foot all the way up to her chest before putting it down when she steps. Is this just because she is sore?

I am not satisfied with how little she is eating. She does have normal droppings except in miniature. I can't seem to really tempt her, and although the first day she would take food from my hand, she hasn't done so since.

If she isn't eating much, then she won't have normal sized poops for a bit, but the high stepping thing, I see that often with birds that are either blind or ill. She needs time is all, I think.

How did that end??
I see my chickens do that high step all the time and thought it is funny. Especially the roosters. Hopefully that isn't a bad thing

That high step can be an early indicator of Mareks. Not always, but when I see that, I always keep a close eye out. If it is consistently the way they walk especially. Many do when they are walking very slowly.

Thank you all for the compliments about my wood projects. I have been fortunate to be able to collect tools over the last 5 or so years and tinker with them. I had no idea I would ever love woodworking. I actually got my start doing home improvement projects than dabbling in 'fun stuff' and building up from there. I find it to be a nice stress relieving activity and I find it to be a good mental challenge, like doing a puzzle. Want to know something though? I have never ever sold a thing I have made. I have given everything away to family and friends. Lots of Christmas and wedding gifts. I think trying to make money off it would take the fun out of it.

With our lovely winters, you could make things to sell along with your eggs and such at the farmer's market. I agree though, once you turn a hobby into a way to make money, it does take the fun out of it. Look at me with my chickens I still have fun, but I am scaling back for that very reason, and a couple of others, I guess. You could sell some stuff just for fun money though. You definitely have a talent and patience to do some very nice things with wood.
My DS is planning to go to school next year in Phoenix to be a guitar builder. He has been called Sandman at school in the shop because he is so meticulous about how wood should be finished. He has been finishing the steps to the upstairs of our two story garage for us and they are beautiful. We have actually had to remind him, they are steps and not fine furniture. LOL He is making a walnut and flame maple nightstand for his room in shop class right now and it is coming along very nicely. We always knew he would do something with his hands. I love that he wants to be a craftsman.

Anybody ever give their chickens whey?

I'm making quark and have a lot of it left over.


PS - I shot my first possum last night. Big male. Rosie kept him cornered for me. Now I know what was living under the coop. It's amazing that all my chickens are intact.

I've sanded and sanded until I couldn't feel my hands. I got the screwdrivers done and them all piled with the saws. I have the hammer handles made and the heads are gluing. Hope they will be set today yet so I can get them done

thanks, I wanted to hear your opinion. I thought about taking her out to the coop but decided she needs more time. Unfortunately, that means a good week in the house since it will be next saturday before I coud move her. I don't want to move her in the dark... she does spend a fair amount of time resting, is still eating very lightly but truly enjoyed eating the flesh out of an apple quarter.

lots of people feed whey to chickens. Good for you getting the possum before the possum got the chickens!
