Minnesota!

OMG Cluckies, that is really funny...but I hope it's nothing serious!

On another note, my inlaws can leave any time now...
I know, it is hilarious, she is fine, it is just what she has always done.

she is silly.

It can be difficult with family, especially inlaws, during the holidays, have a drink on me

When I got chickens I never suspected I would think about them so much. We were gone over Christmas and my neighbor cared for the critters so I knew they would be fine, but I missed them! My son was home and saw my chickens for the first time....I think the whole critter care thing is not his cup of tea but he was polite. His girlfriend asked numerous questions and seemed genuinely interested. Anyway, was a nice holiday.

HI all, so question for Minnie, Lala, and any other long time chicken owners. So Cluck-Cluck has this way of shaking her neck, it looks really funny, none of my other birds have ever done it, she is the only one I have seen do it, and she has done it since she was a chick. She does it when she is eating mostly I believe. I finally got the video uploaded today, have any of you seen this type of behavior before? like I said, she is 19 months old and has been doing it her whole life, so it is not a disease or anything... Just a habit? lol she does it right at the end of the short video, she is the buff oprington...

If she has always done it and you have treated for mites, I would say it is just her own little weirdness thing. I haven't had any birds who do that unless they have an ear issue or mites.

OK,,, Finally came to a agreement with the sellers contracts are signed Now to sell my house to pay for Farm.. yep I did it.. It didnt take Long to make the jump from city slicker to owning hobby farm on 5 acres.. less then 6 months..LOL... here are some pics...

Ok, i already have some observations and lessons on day 4 here is my run down then i will follow up with my lessons at the end

Here is what they look like on 'day 1' I soak them in a coffee can. Currently soaking them for 24 hours

Here is 'day 2' which is 24 hours in the bin. No signs of growth yet.

'Day 3' is 48 hours in bin. Just starting to sprout

And 'Day 4' - 72 hours in bin. plenty of roots coming out. Notice the darker color spots. This bin is starting to grow fuzz and has an off odor.

What i have learned is a few things:
1) probably should only soak oats for 12 hours, not 24. They are looking pretty swollen when i dump them. I also need to start rinsing them before i add them to the 'day 1' bin.
2) oats are not getting enough air causing mold
3) bins are not draining well which could be adding to #2. too much moisture is staying in the bins

I will be figuring out how to change this set up to allow me to leave the lids off and to tilt them more to increase drainage. I think i will be back to my original plan of building a wooden framework to hold the bins. live and learn!
