Minnesota!

For us who need to/will need to use water heaters, do you just keep the heated water dishes outside and avoid any wind, or do you put the water inside where the birds can access it (and increase risk of humidity, fire, dirtied water etc.?
this is what i use, i have it plugged in with a extension cord. it is in the run and not inside the coop. my coop is not heated but is insulated. they spend the days in the run and seem just fine..I have not had the water freeze yet.. fingers xx~ed...

there is no way to catch up on all the reading so i just read the last couple of pages... wish i could stop by more often,,, hope everyone is warm and well...

Well, the 15 day forecast excites me some.... I also noticed today that I saw peaks of sunrise as I loaded up my two little ones into a cold truck before going to daycare then work. Spring is beginning to show its first signs of the seasonal fight that all Minnesotans seem to get caught in for the next few months. Was wondering. Does anyone have a silkie who lives with other regular chickens? Or do they have to be separated due to their size.

I have noticed the starts of sunrise as well. It definitely raises the spirits a bit

I have had Silkies with large fowl. It isn't a clear answer, but it depends on the birds. I notice that birds raised together as chicks get along better. It can be a hit or a miss. Any crested breeds tend to get pecked on by other birds. Even during breeding season the crests on the Silkies can get pecked down to less fluffy.
The other thing to keep in mind if you are looking at getting a Silkie is they take several weeks to sex. I have had 4-month old fool me. They are by far the most difficult breed to sex early. Sometimes there are obvious cockerels, but if a cockerel is submissive and has been constantly dominated by a tougher male, their male features won't really come out until they reach close to sexual maturity age. It is a funny thing to see. I find that mine aren't big crowers either, so that isn't a good indicator until they are grown up.

I am noticing it on both ends of the day. It feels good.

I have been a bit giddy the last couple of days, there is a flock of 10 quail out in the field! I love seeing those cute little birds out there! They were out for quite a while the other day and I turned my back and they were gone.
I really want to get some quail this Spring, but I am not sure which kind to get. I want them big enough to eat. I also would like to find where I could get eggs to hatch and release with them. There are so few in Minnesota, it would be nice to get the population back up. Problem is their habitat has been destroyed in many places :(

Oh, and there is a flock of wild turkeys in another part of that field that come out every afternoon around 4:00. There is about 20 of those. They were all standing with their heads in the air, like a Runner Duck stands. It was funny. They must have heard a weird sound that put them on alert. Two of them were in our trees a couple of weeks ago, and I mean UP in the trees, in the tops of the Silver Maples!
