Minnesota!

Lala sorry to hear about all your troubles.

Well I am down two chicks from this weeks hatch. 1 I tried grafting to a broody and he didnt stay under her and must have died over night. Now I gave her another and its going alot better!

really rough afternoon/night.

Took off work early to let the new mamas learn to go out with their babies. Spent 4 hours supervising, rooster attacked chicks, the two mamas got into it multiple times. babies scattered. Finally mamas got their babies in to the coop. One mama left a chick behind. Chick as fast as greased lightning. Took the mama out of the coop and put her in the run, and the baby would come to her but wouldn't follow her. Mama frantic to go into coop because her chicks in there were screaming distress calls. I let mama back in the coop and tried catching the lone chick again, took mama back out, repeated. No dice.

Called a neighbor to help me as I couldn't corral the chick and it was getting dark. THe run is so big and it would go under the coop and I would have to go around. She came with her daughter, chick flew out of run and into raspberry patch and then garden. Finally gave up. Chick is not well feathered at all and will probably not make it til morning. And if she does....not sure how I would get it back.

THe broody sitting on 3 eggs hatched one out. Came home to find a little squished chick in front of mama, scalped. I don't know if the hen killed it, or if it didn't make it and then she went at it? She is a first time mama and you never know.

days like this....you think you are just done with chickens. I know better days will be ahead, but doesn't feel that way right now.

Sorry to hear about all of your troubles...

Better days are ahead.

Did your broodies hatch out any duck or geese eggs for you? I think Cleo is finally going broody, so I'm going to stick the handful of eggs they laid this morning under her as well as the eggs I have stored. We'll see how it goes. I'd much rather have one of the duck hens hatch the eggs than my incubator.

I enjoy hearing about how much you like the Buckeyes! I have yet to find that one breed that I could stick with forever. However, I do really like my Black Copper Marans.

No I didnt get a single gosling or duckling this year! I have no clue why. I cant get them to start! I am going to sell my African geese and find some Sebastopols this summer. There is always people selling them. BUT my goose is broody. I think. We will see what happens.

I do have a broody BA who might get some Guinea eggs. My Grandpas friend has about 40 Guineas and is getting lots of eggs so he is going to get some and then I am getting keets from Ralph.

The Sebastopols are very pretty. It would be cool if you could get one with all curly feathers. If you do decided to ever get back into Muscovy ducks, I should be able to set you up with some nice barred ones :-) I'm going for the Silver and Blues primarily.

the sebastols are the only ones that have ever tempted me, I agree, they are beautiful!

Guess what? that little chick, with just wing feathers and a teeny tail, all down everywhere else, not only survived low 30's, it found its way back to the run too! THe mama hens kept their babies in til it warmed up, so the little lone chick was screeching and running all over for a few hours. The other hens ignored it, but one hen did follow it everywhere but didn't get close.

Mama seemed happy to see her chick, so they re-united just fine.

And she made sure all her babies made it back into the coop even though it took 5 tries before that silly chick followed her in. THe other broody hen tried again to convince her chicks to fly up to the roost that is about 6 feet off the ground - they refused. I finally pulled her off the roost and put her in with her babies, who beelined under her to get warm.

So, Amelia, the first time broody that hatched the one dead chick, decided to get off the nest today (day 22). She was pacing so I let her out, and her eggs were still warm so I popped them under another broody who was sitting on nothing. Amelia spent the day outside, but at roost time she flew back into the cupboard broody pen. Back sitting on the empty nest. I think I will see if I can break her of her broodiness - the two eggs I gave to the other broody were kicked out of the nest, one broken and nothing had developed.

So y'all were right, better days were ahead.
