They finally got to take her home from the breeders today.

BC it is so cute!!! Now I want a puppy! We only have an 8 year old Pit bull x Yellow Lab. She is the great flock keeper.

Question: If a hen accepts a roosters advance and they mate, does that mean she is close to laying? I witnessed that yesterday but the hens are a week behind the roo at 15.5 weeks. That seems a little young for laying to me. They are the production reds from Mcmurray but still. Some of the reds do have red combs and wattles though.

The Cochin rooster that I sent over to my neighbors (country type) over 3 wks ago showed up here today covered in lice. I found him in the driveway so he didn't have any contact with my other chickens. I treated him for mites before he went over there because he would never leave the coop, then I treated the coop & other chickens. Again I treated him but he is covered in nits on almost every feather shaft. He's in a dog kennel at the other end of the property, as far away from my flock! I took a shower & tossed my cloths in the wash after handling him. He has to be miserable. The question is now what do I do with him. my neighbors have cattle & hay barns & what not. She was going to pick up a couple of hens from relatives to keep him company. When I asked about him, she told me he disappeared the day after I dropped him off, figured a racoon or even one of the barn cats may have got him, just didn't know.

Ralphie: You have good instinct to be a-feared of the teen agers. I feel a bit of the void has disappeared. But I'm a bit sentimental about the loss of Jasmine and where she was at as a mature dog in our house. I think that loss is hard to get over. She was so easy and so well behaved. Training a new one is challenging.

We have tricky training going on. We have a dog we want to hunt and a dog we want to leave chickens alone. Advice from the breeder was to start with a duck hunting dog and make chicken-killing less of a focus. I'm not sure I totally subscribe but dear son and DH are of the breeder's opinion. I'm hoping to make a happy meld of training in both styles. Right now my son is nose deep in a book for training Upland Water Fowling. This little girl has a gentle nature I can tell, already willing to please. Pointed a tennis ball last night. Lots of natural talent, already. I'm scared and I don't want to screw her up but I think...I think... she may be a good one.

She did chicken chores with me this morning tucked in my zip up jacket. She stopped and held stock still-a little nervous seeing the big red rooster and his entourage. Tootsie then must have sensed a bit of energy from her and he put some distance between us. So that's good that there's some mutual respect. I kept a calm low voice with her the whole time, "Niiiiice... Noooo......."

She knows her name already as the breeder has been calling her that for the last 6 weeks when we told them we'd take her and they asked for a name. I think they've been working with her already themselves, too.

We've got some intense work ahead of us...but the kids are gung ho and we have a plan with the chickens ....for now. Distance and Control.
