Minnesota!

Ralphie do you and your wife eat them all or do you share with others? I am trying to figure out how many we would need to get. I was thinking of doing 2 small batches instead of one big. One fall and one spring. I was thinking 25 each since I have the 2 feeder pigs this fall. Not enough? I am very interested in your methods and look forward to following you on this batch and what they weigh out at.

Last year, I gave some to the kids, and sold some. We have almost enough chicken left to get to October.

This year I told my kids they had to go in on them and help with processing. My Son is getting 20, my daughter 15, my mom 5. 5 I will keep alive, that will leave us about 20.

We eat chicken a couple times a week. BUT with these big guys one chicken a week does it. We get the first meal and left overs for a couple days to make soups, sandwiches, hot dishes etc.

Rhett, I am thing 5 hens and 2 roosters over the winter.

I feed all mine the same, I starve them. They get free will feeding for a couple days (22 % protein). then I will feed them 20 minutes twice a day. I will give them grit then and throw a little scratch on the floor and I mean little.

I have one bag of 22% protein, then 2 bags of 18% and down to 15%. By the time I hit the 15% I hope to have them outside in tractors/brooders. I will free range them a few hours at a time to start, then all day by 3 weeks. (under supervision, as hawks and eagles love CX meatballs.)

They have a camp day reserved for them on Oct 9th. I should have most roosters over 10 lbs dressed by then. I would like to get a 15lbs dressed bird....but I doubt I will do that in 13 weeks. I will pick the winners of the "Christmas snow Tour" on that day. Unless I become attached to one, but I doubt that will happen.

I am glad yours arrived safely. Of the 30 I ordered, only two are alive!!! Some DA left them in a cold place overnight and they arrived with only a couple still peeping this morning. For any to still be alive, it had to be whoever put them on the truck last night in Rochester. IDIOTS!!!
So, Strombergs is sending a replacement batch on the the 22nd. I am okay with that since as they get bigger, it will be cooling and they shouldn't be keeling over from heat. Still makes me angry that people are so ignorant and careless.
As for the two remaining, I have a heat lamp on them, but I am not holding my breath that they will survive.

It will all depend on how many your family will eat.
We have 4 of us left in the house, but I give some to our son who lives in Rochester too on occasion. I also will have some large fowl purebred Cornish to process this year, but I can those since they are tougher for roasting birds. I will pressure cook the pure birds sometimes because those that have been out on pasture tend to be stringy and tough if they get old enough.
Anyway, we did 50 the first year and had enough to last almost 2 years, but my kids were little. Depending on how good they are, sometimes my carnivorous family will strip a 5.5# bird in one night. Other times, it barely gets touched so I use it for soup or other dishes, like Ralphie said.
This year I will be cutting up about 10 birds so we can have parts to cook in different recipes rather than just whole birds.
If you started with 25 in the Spring, or if you tried them yet this year, which there is time, then you would know how much you would need in the next batch.
I have 2 big freezers and they will both be full this fall with a half pig, the CRX, and any rabbit, beef, duck and chickens that I have left from this past year.

OK:D Next spring I might need some Cochin eggs if u r still breeding them.
I have been debating over them, but will probably keep some. It is hard to let go the ones I have a special place for, if you know what I mean. The reason I don't have eggs now is because they have all been broody! Surprise, surprise. LOL
