well the girls are all tucked in for the night. it was hard to see the coop was dark inside already, but they found a corner and are all huddled together. I closed the window right above them and closed the window on the opposite wall half way, i hope they stay warm enough... i would hate for anything to happen to them....fingers xx`ed...hope i critter proofed it enough.. think i will work on that alittle more tomorrow...

I'm sure they'll be fine. My guess it is plenty warm for the next few nights. Ralphie and the others may know when you no longer need heat on them after that.They may not need it at all after that. I've only had the one batch of chicks so i'm no expert! I'm like this

For the darkness part, I use a headlamp at night to tuck them in at night, then again in the morning before work at 4:45am. I love my head lamps, ive killed two by accident though... oops. (did I mention i'm very hard on things?)

Do you remember the Sears catalog with all the models wearing long johns? Kinda appealing in a Minnesota way.

When I was in the Navy we went to Ft. Lauderdale, in June. When I walked off that ship I darn near hit the floor, I had to grab the rail when my knees buckled. the air was so hot and heavy I couldn't get any air in my lungs, felt like I hit a brick wall.  
We made our way to th beach.  The sand was so hot you could not stand on it. we ran into the ocean to cool off, right?  nope, the water was super warm, felt like I was in a boiling pot of water, got out. now I'm salty, sandy, and hot. ran to that shower to wash off, it doesn't work.  I'm a piece of bacon.  I was on the beach a total of 15 minutes, went to the nearest bar and sat there til it closed, then stumbled back to the ship.  Never went back.    they can keep it!  I figured this is what hell must be like. 

Am so with you on that. We lived in Florida for a year and while the winters were pleasant they can keep the summers. Laying on a hot beach only too "cool off" in warm water..

My dilemma:

I have that silly little turkey poult that was hatched at noon on Tuesday.

It is a lone poult, I have another that hatched today but it is dying. It seems late hatches never do well for me.

Scandiafowl has agreed to raise the poult. BUT she cannot take it until after Wednesday next week.

I know I would not be able to give it up after another week and the first 10 days are the hardest, IMHO.

So is there someone else that is interested in having it? OR is there someone that could take it and care for it for a week for ScandiaFowl?

I will give you the turkey. and some feed to hold you over. I just do not want to be stuck with a single one.

It is well on it's way to being spoiled rotten.  She wants to be held all the time. We let her run around on the dining room table while we sit at it. My wife gave it a walk around the house.

I took it to bed with me this morning at 4am as it seemed lonely...

As you can see If I keep it for a week, I will never get rid of it. I am kind of a  big softy.  I need it gone soon or  I will never get rid of it, It will get a name if it stays much longer. A name means they stay forever and cannot be eaten... So my Dilemma., if you can help.. thanks!

the dark one is Siamese and the white is half MainCoon and half Siamese...and my son stands over 6 ft tall...
and the chicks have NO heat on them at this point...

As far as roosting goes, I have a batch of 9 week olds that literally just stopped the clustering in the corners and started to roost. more and more every night. I think we only have 9 or 10 left (out of 27) last I checked tonight that were not roosting.
I don't really think you will need supplemental heat. If they have feathers, which it looks like it in the pictures, they should be ok. And they are in the coop not outside so that should help too. Don't worry (easier said than done I know) They will be super happy to see you in the morning all bright eyed and cheep cheeping away!

from what I gather, chicks should be kept at around 90 degrees when hatched and their temp can be dropped around 5 dergrees per week as they age. feel free to correct me if I have false info
