I know it gives off some gases. I have no idea what. My Dad use to warn us as kids to stay away from the freshly filled silo.  Every year or two we would hear about a farmer that went into the silo too soon and died. I am guessing that means whatever gas it is  heavier than air to get trapped in the silo itself.
Carbon dioxide is heavier than air so I can imagine that a silo could become heavy with co2 and you could asphyxiate

Going back to talking about buying grains and things, after my vacation next week is when I plan to make some calls around to different feed mills in the area. If anyone is interested I might ask about larger bulk orders, which i would be happy to split with one or more people to help share some savings. I'm looking to beat farm store pricing.
Things I am inquiring about are:
Oats
Wheat
Barley
Milo/millet
BOSS
Layer mash/ration

ok so i went out in the rain and put a tarp up over the top of the run, i turned the straw but it is still soaking wet and opened the pop door. Out ran the chickens then they turned around and went back in the coop...LOL
