Minnesota!

I love all the old names.  My kids all have old school names!  Gertrude reminds me of Journey to the Center of the Earth.  Gertrude, Gertrude!!!  Love that name! :)

Gertrude or Gertie was my beloved Grandmothers name. I love the name Gertie. My next round of hens are going to be old country western singers: Peggy Lee, Patsy Cline, etc

I don't know what's worse, feeding a chicken leftover chicken strips or the fact that they eat them.

Pictures with that barn....omg... Scandia... I'm so jealous.

What in tarnation is chicken of the woods?
it's like a toad stool only edible. I think they call it sulfur shelf or something too. I was told if you dip this in batter and deep fry it it tastes like chicken exactly. Fall is a great time for finding edible mushrooms.

Blanch... After what you pay for granite they better fix it. I hope they do. When I put the granite in the kitchen here, I did everything except the granite. I would have liked to have tried it but I figured it was too expensive for me to screw up on. I even paid the extra for them to measure it. I got it from St. Augusta near St. Cloud. I have a granite back splash on a portion that had to fit between two different coutnertops levels (kitchen and bar countertop heights) they screwed that up and ended up having to recut a piece and refit it back in. They tried to force a piece in and cracked it in two.

I did put the granite in the bathroom myself, even measured it myself, but that was only a few hundred dollars and not as expensive as the kitchen was. Good luck on all of that.
I did all those exact same things. Moved all the power, lights switches and outlets, fridge and stove plus the pantry. It has been hell. Had to install a loop drain for the center isle.

Good news is they are going to replace it. Thank God. And that is why it is the only thing I did not do myself. But when push came to shove I was worried.

I know that she's probably a mix of several breeds but the colors are beautiful. We have a couple like this.
That is and amazing chicken!! Need a nice picture of it to put up in my kitchen. It matches. My cabinets are almost black wood grain. Stove is bright red.

Have a good time KlopKlop.

I picked up my harvested lawn Grass up at my parents place. It was only one 33 gallon bins worth he wind rowed for me. Oh well it's 33 gallons more of grass I have. But I bought two of them. Sun was setting low when I got there anyways. Next time. Plus i have my lawn to get put up tomorrow before our rainy weekend.
Got DH phone all taken care of too tonight. We are all systems go now.

Went foraging today and came home with a couple lobster mushrooms. They are delicious.

Plus DH came home with a huge chicken of the woods his friend gave him. I'm not sure who's all going to be eating this stuff but looking forward to trying it all out with some steaks.
Num. I have always wanted to study that. Never got around to it.

I made 4 more pints of beets today. I thought I figured out the recipe so I had enough brine but I didn't again. Maybe the recipe doesn't make enough brine to begin with. I way over estimated and was still short. Still a work in progress and I will continue to tweak it until I get it right. Then it will be written down and added to the recipe box. Flavors are there just need enough brine!
I got all my supplies needed for making pickles. I am going to pick some and do just one or two jars tomorrow to get my feet wet then tackle it full on. New recipes so I want to get my bearings first before jumping all in. Unless someone has a tried and true recipe they want to share..................................? I read the secret to crisp pickles is to put fresh cucumbers in ice water for hours then pickle them. Anyone know this to be true? Also heard to put grape leaves in the jars to keep them crisp. Don't have any fresh grape leaves so I will opt to cut the flower end off.
Feel free to pass along any knowledge you have on canning to a newbie. I sure could use it!! :)

I learned about the lobster mushrooms last year. They are pretty easy to identify. Trust me when I say we tried them quite apprehensively even though id 'ed with an expert, but now-- no holds barred.

Chicken of the woods will be new to us but also id'd by some one who forages regularly and has had this before.

If you have Facebook go to the Minnesota mushroom forum. Or gentleman forager- same guy. You can see what he's picking and selling. Lobster mushrooms have high market value. I believe they're going for $50 lb.
