Minnesota!

Yesterday I went through the Feathersite. Piece-meal by piece-meal and nothing rang a bell. And I do believe and have come to the conclusion that what I read 2-3 years ago was of a special cross as Minnie has suggested.... And maybe just a BYC blowhard too. Strongest suspicion on that latter. It was just a tidbit that tweaked my interest and my love for different foods. And who wouldn't want to try something extra delicious.

Ultimately I'm a fan of heritage breeds. Barnyard raised in America. I hate pretense though on any side of the coin. The uppitiness of that article just kills me knowing the real story of the chicken hell those birds live in. Chicken absorbs and reflects back lots of flavors. Wonderful chefs there I'm sure....but it's actually the beauty of working with chicken meat in general.

I'm even more of a fan of different colored eggs in my egg cartons. If it takes a cross Olive egger to get me olive eggs then I'll take a cross.

I have a pretty good spread of egg colors right now. I think I'm gonna send my roo to freezer camp later this fall and get a new one in the spring and let my silkie hatch another brood.

Ok I am LOVING this weather!!

The pictures are so stunning Lala and Bogtown! Just beautiful!

I need to do some rearranging to make a rooster coop. I will keep them all for now. So now I need to get them all in one spot. I had to remove some this morning from the younger coop. They were just causing too much havoc.
My brother in law posted some of his chickens on Craigslist. I told him it wasn't likely they would sell based on what you guys said and how many chickens are on the Craigslist. Well, he had a couple people call but no one bought any and yesterday he reduced his prices to try to sell them. HA HA Can I say I told ya so yet?

That't it!!!

I read an article in the NY Times about one of the NY restaurants who serves only the "Rouge" chicken and it is Amish raised.  Well, I looked it up.  It is a hybrid chicken, first of all.  So is the Red Sex Link, Red Production, Dixie Rainbows, CRX, etc, etc, etc.

Also, there was a picture in the article of the farm they were raised on.  Guess what?  They might have been Amish, but those birds are still raised in a CONFINEMENT building!  Just like all the commercial CRX on the market.  So, they have this quaint 'story' about the chicken they use, but in reality, they aren't doing anything any more special than the rest of the commercial markets.

So, once again, here is a "new" chicken everyone will want to get.  There is nothing wrong with the American heritage breeds, or the hybrids developed here in the US, but because someone slapped the French twist on those, they will be all the rage now.

My intent in posting the link had to do more with the breed.

I like the world view when it comes to chickens, breed development in different countries. But abhor any factory chicken raising, hence my own flock.
If you think American chicken farming is bad, check Japanese chicken production on YouTube.
During our time in China I walked wide circles around the markets where puppies were sold.
It makes sense to me that other cultures have different food sources, where Hindus revere cows we see them as a steak source.

Trendy food is trendy food, but for my mother, who grew up on the French-German border, Bresse is her normal.

Enough of my diatribe.

So I was talking to some people about my chickens (funny how that always happens) and the were saying they have wished they could have chickens but never have because they don't have the technical knowledge to build a coop. It got me thinking of course... How cool would it be if there was a company that 'city folk' could go to and get a turn key backyard chicken system. I'm thinking on the scale of 2-3 hens only. They would basically be buying a backyard coop/tractor and the necessary equipment like feeders and waterers and it could even come with hens or started pullets. There could be some sort of training/schooling about chicken care included as well as follow up support as needed while they learn about their new flock.

I've added this idea to my list of 'income opportunities' for when I decide I'm tired of riding a desk on weekdays

Geez Poor KlopKlop is getting slammed to the floor on all his good ideas today,,

I being a farm "kid" look at factory farms differently. We did not have a "factory" when I was a kid, but I understand we could never feed the country let alone the world without them. It would be cost prohibitive to produce eggs and chickens for the county the way we do. That said I think we do a better job of it and our products are better.

It is no different than Ford, Chrysler or Volkswagon, how many of us could afford a hand made car? No Doubt one would be better, but the cost is beyond us.

I consider us lucky to have birds we raise our way and the eggs from them..

And now I forgot why I started this rant...... dang old age!
