Cute pic Bogtown, I would be willing to drive to Longville as we drive to Walker for the Casino twice a month for cigaretts. It has been a few year since I have been to longville. The pic that is of me is at my mom's grave site. Hubby and I moved to Brainerd at their farm to take care of mom. We moved in in April, got chickens in May and she died June 26th of the same year. It was the hardest thing ever but she died here at home with family around and her dignity in tacked. I can't think of a better way to go. Dad requested us to stay so I have expanded my flock from just 11 hens to over 50. Many of mine are pullets and should start laying come March. My chickens were and are my sanctuary to get away and relax. My hubby has since found the same. I also have ducks and some geese. Dad likes the duck and I got the geese to help eat the grass instead of mowing it. We are on 80 acre's and way to much mowing around all the buildings plus the triming.

Look forward to our coffee date some time.

Sorry about your Mom, but you describe such comfort in her passing and really, that's the best one can hope for. Death is a part of life. Your life with your birds sounds wonderful...and 80 acres sounds wonderful! Lucky birds.

I so agree with watching the birds and enjoy them so much. Sanctuary is a good word for it.

We could all meet in Walker too for that matter. Closer to the casino and for Missa Chickabee. March and April seems to be a slower time around here for us, then it gets crazy again May and through the summer. Look forward to some Chicken Chat.

Thanks Bogtown for the kind words about mom. Dad and I promised her that we will fallow her wishes to the end. In the end her last words were to the emts were F*** You. At that time our housekeeper wanted every messure tp keep her alive. Not right and not fair. When mom had stated that ot the emts dad and I laughed and asked them to leave. They were determind to take her to the hospital. If want to have your wishes followed you have to have a very strong person, an up to date living will, and a Power of Attorney for Medical. With out all this they can do as they wish.

We can go have coffee at anytime for me but on Wednesday's. Chicken Cat sounds great.

I waned to be able to post the Minnesota forum in my signature and the only way I knew to do it was to post some pics in here-so grabbed a few pics

Sadly, I have to report that I just lost most of my flock to a"predator". ...in this case, a dog who slipped his kennel. :-( :-(. Included in the loss were both my Welsummer hens and roo. He was my dominant roo. :-(. I also lost 2 Marans cross pullets who had just started laying, the sweetest blue Marans roo ever, and 2 other Marans cross Roos. All That managed to survive we're two other Marans cross Roos. It's been a horrible weekend for us. :-(.
On the positive front, I candled the eggs in the incubator, and have some signs of life in all three types of eggs in there, so I will just have to be patient and hope for some nice wellsummer and Marans chicks in a few more weeks.

So Sorry Lauralgirl. I can't imagine. Was it your dog or a neighbor dog? Neighborhood dogs are my biggest fear. My own has been trained to "avoid" or steer clear the chickens. But when she's out I still like to be out there with her.

so sorry. I lost 15 hens to two dogs who dug under fences to get to them a few years back. I can't free range because there are occasional dogs passing through - they are more of a problem then the coyotes, the wolves, the bears or the foxes. Now I have fenceline laid on the ground and tied to the upright fence to prevent digging under. Still have a problem now and then with the horned owls - they will walk under the pine trees/under the coop and get the hen.

I am glad you have some eggs that you think will hatch.

Lauralgirl: I am so sorry! I can't even imagine!!!! Are the chicks from the ones you lost?

Thanks BC. Thankfully, it was my own dog. No one to blame but myself... One of our dogs is very good with the chickens and doesn't bother them at all. The other one will kill anything that runs from it - we just can't break him of it, so he has a large fenced area of the yard that he's limited to unless he's on leash. Since it had been so cold, the flock was in the coop for days, and my husband had let the dog out. My son didn't realize the dog was out and let out his birds before school..... Bleh... But, that little guy, bless his heart, is just so grateful that two of the young Roos are still alive... They will never make it to the stew pot now!

Anglebub, these are not eggs from our hens, sadly. I really would have liked chicks from our own Wellies. The day it happened, one of the maran x pullets had laid, so I put that egg in the bator with the rest. She had only been laying about 10 days, so not sure if it will be fertile, but my son will be just thrilled if we can get a chick from his "doodlebuddy". My older son shows the dogs for 4-h, and he is sure we should fence the chickens, not the dog. I'm pretty sure we just need one less Newfoundland!
