Okay, Minnesota chicken people. I've been searching for information on chicken ordinances for Alexandria, but haven't been able to find anything. I've checked the threads and links on BYC for chicken ordinances as well as google searches. Does anybody have any ideas where else I can check? I'm starting to think about moving and prefer to move somewhere where chickens have the green light.

I called my county and my township to get my answers. But I don't live in a city.

Update: I live in Aitkin county, and there are no noted regulations for keeping poultry other than providing food and shelter. As you would for all livestock, the same goes for my township.

Erlibird I, too, was disheartened to see lows of -18, -16 for the next two nights. I'm not letting chickens out until noon it appears for the next two days.

I don't live in a town...so I looked up County regulations for Cass County and found what I needed to know about keeping chickens/livestock. Each county is different though, in the way they make their regulations. Crow Wing just south of us was weirdly stricter than Cass...just next door to us. But things are changing too...

Yep still cold.
I let the chickens out to the run before I left at 6:30 this morning, I might have left them inside but the 2 young roos are getting really hormonal!

so it was best to open the pop door. If it was nice out I'd let them roam the yard all day...

School delayed 2 hours already tomorrow. -30 in the AM! Nothing above zero until Noon on Friday. I suppose I should make some flock blocks for boredom busting tomorrow. ugh.. But on a bright note DH did say he heard 49 for a temp a week from this Friday. That day cannot come soon enough....woot woot.

I haven't heard anyhting near 49 any time soon but I'll take it!
What is your flock block recipe if you don't mind sharing??

Isn't this just getting to be too much? It was too much at the beginning of February, now it's the beginning of March and we're still in the same boat! It was -18 this morning. I opened the girls' coop up at 7am, they didn't come out until 9. The good thing is, the sun is so strong, it warms their coop up to 30 during the day. At least they have somewhere warm to go. I always throw some scratch in the shavings in the coop to keep them in there, picking around, until it warms up a bit.

This is just excruciating! I don't remember a winter like this.

Well somebody must be California Dreamin' in his office. I just looked at the 10 day forcast on Weather.com and there's some 20's coming up for the weekend of the 7th/8th but no 49's. Makes for good office gossip...anything above zero I guess.

Sorry all to give you all such high hopes based on DH inaccurate forcast gossip.

Erli-bird, I use the Chicken Chicks recipe for Flock Block. If I don't have exactly what she has I add another cup of dry ingredient that I do have. But my birds do really like it and it makes the house smell amazing. I'm going to plant a bunch of Marigolds this summer around my gardens and harvest the petals when they start to fade...so I can have this ingredient for next winter. Will help keep deer and bunnies away too a bit.
