Minnesota!

Went out to give fresh water this afternoon and my coronation Sussex rooster was dead!

He was perfectly fine this morning and never showed any signs of anything being wrong, so heart broken right now! Thinking the major temp swings had something to do with it. Hoping I can get out there and collect eggs from the two hens in the next few days before they freeze and try to incubate them since they should be fertile for a bit. I went through lots of heartbreak of d.o.a chicks and shipped eggs of this breed, now this.

Does anybody have a light Sussex roo they're looking to get rid of? Or even chicks/hatching eggs? That way I can make some coro/light splits....

I am so sorry! We lost a EE hen this Sunday past. It's not easy finding such a loss I'm sure. That's too bad....

Thanks! I LOVE the breed (though the roo was kinda cranky) and was devastated to find him. This has been such a tough winter and the last week has been especially hard emotionally. I had a miscarriage last week so this is just more icing on the cake

MnHomestead, I am so sorry with all the heartache! I myself had a miscarriage at 3 months, it happened on Christmas morning of 2006. That was the only time I was able to get prego. My heart just breaks for you. I have lost many chickens this winter too.

I am very mad at mother nature right now. We should be warming up not getting all this Artic cold. Global warming is a joke!!!!

This winter has been horrible with the cold and snow! I know you had lots of heart ache just to get the Sussex that you have.

Sorry on the miscarriage, too. Been there a few too many times and it is something you always carry in your heart. Take care of yourself - a little pampering!

Oh...gosh. Miscarriage too?! Yikes. I've never had the experience but a couple friends who have and it was devastating to them. They went on to have babies without issue afterwards...but it's definitely a low point for them. I can't imagine. Hugs all around mnHomestead.

Thank you Triplell, coldupnorth and Bogtown Chick! And so sorry to hear trip and cold that you have gone through this as well. I was 10 weeks along, I know in my heart that it just wasn't a pregnancy that was developing right and my body knew to end it, but it is devastating nonetheless. I am doing better, but then when things like this happen it triggers the waterworks again, darn hormones.

So, someone brought 8 rabbits into my work today. Someone dumped at least 10 in another person's yard. His dogs killed 2. He rounded up 8 and the local Humane Society refused to help! So they are all together in a huge dog crate at work. I have to rearrange all of my chickens so I can make space for these rabbits until I can find homes for them. No doubt any females are pregnant already :( 2 have frostbite on the ears, one is thin and weak. They appear to be mixed breed, some are very large. Maybe meat type mixes. If anyone wants one please let me know. I will send pictures.

Just logged on, mnhomstead-I'm so sorry to hear about the heartaches! I wish I could help with the Sussex just to lift your spirits, but I'm still so new. I agree with coldupnorth, pamper yourself, be patient with yourself because those hormone really do suck! Hugs and more hugs.

Saturday I'll find out how my flock is doing. I think we are coming home too soon, but hubby has a dr appt that can't be missed. I know you all feel so sorry for me (said sarcastically).

AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!! GO HOME POLAR VORTEX, YOU'RE DRUNK!

Sorry, I just had to let out my frustrations. The feather picking has gotten so bad that I'm going to separate my two poor Australorps tomorrow. Up until now it's just been feathers, but today they broke skin and I don't want it escalating any farther. I've tried upping protein, hanging cabbage, baking flock blocks, avia charge in the water, smearing vaporub on the victims, spraying with bluekote.... I feel like the only cure is summer time!
