Minnesota!

My little broody.

Has anyone sent a bird in to the U of MN for a necropsy?

How much did it cost?

What did you think of it all?

Just trying to decide if its worth it. I looked it up and it's $75 dollars but I always thought it was cheaper than that so just wondering if they raised the price. I am having my little hen put down next week because of a large mass that is growing rapidly while she is losing weight. I just don't know if it's worth 75 dollars to find out if it was cancerous or if she had anything else going on. But how much would it be to cremate her at the vet? Maybe it would be about the same, I have no idea.

Anyone have any advice or suggestions? Just sort of stressed and sad so trying to make sense of it all

Thanks

Hello theacw,
Sorry to read your sad news about your sweet bird.
I havn't been on here for a few days and just saw this, I took a hen in to the U a couple years ago and that was the price, it was 75 for one bird or several if you brought them at the same time. The one I brought was the last living of three that had the same symptoms as the other two that had died so I wanted to know if it was something contagious before I got more chicks. It wasn't so that was a relief to find out. She had fatty liver disease so I am careful that my flock doesn't get unhealthy treats now. I brought mine in alive so they could get a good blood sample then they euthanized her an did the necropsy.

Take care!

Oh my we don't need any more snow that's for sure.
I just bought 3 turkey poults, DB Bronze's. Does anyone know if we have blackhead here I. Central MN? Other wise they will have to free range in our backyard.

Triplell: I had blackhead in one of my chickens last summer. But these birds went through a very rainy June last year and she was pigging out on the worms that the roo found. I have alot of low marshy areas around us...a couple of pot holes, etc.

Keep them on high ground away from the chook poo if you can. Maybe get some Fishzole and wormer on hand just in case. From what I understand in turkeys, it hits them hard and fast, and they're gone.

Oh FoxyChicken...I cannot imagine how sick to death of that white stuff you must be. Praying that it does not stick.

We had a dusting last night but it only stuck in some cold shady ditches that I saw. Mostly just rain here. Yuck. You poor people.
