Currently have 20 2 week old mixed breed - bought at 1 week old
13 mainly Rhode Island Red hens
2 Polish Roosters (1-Bantum)
2 Cochin hens (1-Bantum)
2 Plymouth Rock hens
2 Wessummer hens (more of a mix)
2 mixed breed large Roosters
27 eggs -mixes in the incubator from the above excluding the Rhode Island Reds -on day 20
24 eggs - currently under broody hens

i'm getting excited - hoping to pick up a couple of legbar chicks from tripell tomorrow if today's hatch goes well.

I currently have 3 hens I've separated from the main flock - one of which wen t broody had now has 6 2 week old chicks. THe other two hens sharing the coop have been helping raise the chicks - the hens stopped roosting and nest on the floor with mama and the chicks, adn the chicks crawl all over all three. All three hens feed the chicks, etc.

So, when I pick up these new chicks I'm going to sneak them under one of the hens that was broody before the chicks hatched - once she had access to the chicks, she got off the nest but still has her feathers all puffed out and is still growly. So I'm hoping if I sneak the under her at night that she will just take the chicks.

Keeping my fingers crossed....otherwise I'll brood the chicks.

Wow, sounds like a great flock!
Have fun with your hatches. Any chicks yet?

I just experienced my first hatches. It was so wonderful! Our first broody hatched 7 out of 8 eggs, the second broody hatched 9 out of 10, and I had 11 out of 12 ducklings hatch in the incubator. They are so darn cute!

I picked up a jubilee orpington cockerel yesterday. I'm going to be continuing my porcelain project and using him over my mottled lavender hens. This is going to probably take a few more years and in the process I will have a lot of cull colors. I'll post any that I need to get rid of on this thread for anyone interested. There should be a lot of unique orpingtons available.

I hadn't heard of them. They are sort of near me.... neighboring town. They must be milling their own grain. Interesting. I'd definitely have a lot of questions: ie. is it a complete food, etc...? Ask for an ingredient list/label.

Minnie: what do you feed your chickens for feed? I picked up a Welsummer and Buckeye from the 1st grade hatching project from Shannon and those chicks are big and robust just as the ones that Dixie brooded. I mean I think they all walked right on out of those eggs!!! The genetics is also good, I'm sure playing a major part of this.
