I grew up in St. Pete but have lived many years in the Ocala area. We used to go to the Tarpon springs area too for the gyros, but haven't been there in many years. Now we are older (DH mid 70's and me in my late 60's) we just don't do the things we did when we were younger. DH also has Parkinson's which makes things rather difficult. Years ago we had boats and loved to go fishing. Now and then a friend will help DH and take him fishing. They went yesterday for the last day of the grouper season. We have some Grunt in the freezer from his last trip. They did well on that trip, lots of Grunt..

Here is the thing about heat and cold.... When it is cold, you can keep putting more clothes on. When it is hot, there are only so many you can take off before someone calls the police.

The thermometer is lying today!

Mine is showing almost 30 degrees. BUT when I went out to collect eggs and feed the babies, I FROZE!!!

The wind is nasty today.

When I saw the warmer temps I thought life was getting better.. It is not my 4wheeler refused to start and I had to carry water by hand.....Way too much work for us old fat guys!

I have a horizontal nipple waterer that I use in the summer, a 2 gallon one. I put a 1250 watt tank heater in there, the nipples froze up the second day even though the water was liquid. My water is in the run. I was talking to a guy at work, he brings his in at night. so I may try that and see if it stays liquid all day. I'll have to do it on a weekend, I don't want the girls to go without water for too long if it does freeze.

The poultry waterer did have ice on the top this morning, but I broke it up and took it off and it stayed liquid after that, but then again, it was warm out today. I think no matter what I use i'll have to bring it in nights.

As for water, when it gets subzero and nothing else is working, use rubber pans from a farm and fleet store. They come in different sizes. You flip them over, stomp on the bottom to break the ice and fill them up again. I use heated dog bowls inside but I am working on some heated nipple waterers.

I'm with you - the oil pan heaters don't seem to last. I use heated dog bowls outside, with a plastic ice cream bucket sitting in the bowl. That way, it is easy to lift the bucket up to clean it or empty it - lifting up the dog bowl is a pain because of the coiled cord and being plugged in. Also, the ice cream bucket is a little taller than the dog bowl, so the water stays cleaner - less litter kicked in it.

jailerjoe, do you have any problems with the birds playing with the nipple waterers and getting things wet?

There is some spillage. This morning there was ice dribbling down the cinder block I set the bucket on but not enough to concern me. I'd read that there is little or no spillage so I was a little suprised that there was as much as there was. Nothing that'll make me look to other solutions though. I was also suprised how quickly my chickens figured it out. Within minutes they were drinking from the nipples.

If you take off too many clothes, no one will call the police, they'll call the guys in the little white suits.

I think I would fear the frostbite more than the white coats... I know it is weird but after reading this all I could think is how painful it would be to, to be outside without shoes and socks!

I can't imagine walking to my coop from the house barefoot.
