I'll brag about Minnie's Barnyard Crosses as well as I've been recipient of some. I feel like they could be entered at a fair...Just saying Minnie....even your Barnyard Crosses are competitive looking to me! Ha.

This bird is my favorite. She's just solid. Sweet temperament. I know this topic is leading away from the good hard work Minnie does breeding for competitive winners. But even the crosses are something in my humble opinion.

Elevators around here don't start selling chicks until late February or March, and they are on order except for their "chick days" around the end of April.
Runnings has them too, and Tractor Supply, but also not right now.

That is a pretty girl, Bogtown! She must have been out of a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte on one side. I have 4 hens left of those and will breed them with the Black Ameraucana for Easter Eggers soon. The BLRWs were another cutback breed this last summer. Sometimes the mutts can be the prettiest birds, but they start are not showable, especially in open class! 4-H allows hybrids for meat class (CRX is preferred and the only thing that will win), Pearl White Leghorns for White Eggs and some variety of Red Production, Sex-link or other hybrid for brown eggers. Open class entries are based on accepted pure breeds according to the APA/ABA. So, it makes me wonder if someone's excitement is a little over zealous and not quite informed if they are recruiting for a show indiscrimnantly.

I think when we last messaged about her you thought maybe she was offspring to your BLRW roo which must have got some barnyard privileges every once in a while. ;) she is lovely and I know nothing about showing but her tail and overall shape are just so boxy and square -- no squirrel tail like the hatchery hens. And the size of her! She stands with the buckeye beak to beak: good sized! She's fun and a show piece around my yard. She gets a lot of attention from the family and visitors alike.

Here she is again from yesterday. She's high hen right now I believe... Hanging with the Roo as she is laying now. I wish I had another profile pick of her. But I think my favorite part of her is her hackle or cape feathers. Love the contrast there.
