Minnesota!

I think the weather has something to do with the winters eggs.

I am wondering what is going to happen as we head back into the freezer next week.  At  least it can't hang on that long this time of year. It has been a weird winter.

What breeds do you have, I noticed my BSL and EE took the biggest hit on egg laying.

I have two EE's, two RIR's, two BORPS, two Barred rocks, one Buttercup, and one white leghorn. They never really slowed down at all but they're first year hens, I added light through mid december and I'm supplimenting barley fodder to thier feed. No idea if the fodder has anything to do with it but they love it.

Wierd is definitly a good description but I'm not complaining and will take this for as long as I can.

Hi-
Don't mind me jumping in here and interrupting everyone but I was so excited to see other folks from Minnesota I couldn't help myself!!  I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself.

I am Rhetts from the Iron Range (about an hour north of Duluth) I am new to chicken raising so BYC has been super helpful.  I look forward to learning more about chickens and the people who raise them!!  I am excited to be able to have other Minnesotans that I can ask questions from regarding raising our flocks in a state with the challenges it poses (weather and predators mostly).

I currently have a large variety of chickens, 38 to be exact, 6 geese, 5 ducks and 4 turkeys.

Thanks for letting me jump in here.

Welcome Rhetts.

I am impressed with all you Newbies taking care of 30+ birds. Holy mackerel! Doing it up right away! I guess I feel just right with my 10 or so. That many I'd be anxious and the deck would be quite slippery.

I would be a basket case with that many right off the bat. 6 and I am anxious all the time as already as well!

Well, the chickens actually behave themselves quite well. Not so much with the geese and turkeys!! I think their favorite place to poo is my deck. The shovel is a permanent deck ornament for us! ;)

Indeed, we did go all in when deciding to add poultry to our lives. My Husband and I's conversation mid May of 2014 went something like this....... Oh, should we get some chickens? OK. How about some geese? Sure. Well, I like ducks. Why not? Heck, turkeys would round out the flock. Oh Yeah!

lol, thats chicken math! I'm impressed that you have down as a newbie, takes most of us longer than that.
welcome!

@lightchick-Yes, I think the birds do go on the deck just for the sake of pooping on it. BTW My daughter was wondering if your avatar picture is of a real bird. I told her I thought so but she says it looks so beautiful it must be a statue or something with the dark comb and purple feathering. I told her I would ask you.
