Minnesota!

Well I lost a duckling and a GLW chick. I'm scared my birds have a bug. They r acting fine and just die. If we lose anymore we r going to have the birds tested. I am prating its nothing major.

mnhomestead, your sulmtalers are beautiful! I'm curious about why you have changed your mind about raising them? I still have two of the three I ended up with when those mixed up chicks came from the new brighton woman.
Thanks! The only reason I am selling them is because I am running out of space. Someone had to make the cut and the sulmtalers drew the short straw. I will be keeping the bresse, Swedish flower, cream legbars, black copper marans, Muscovy ducks, and possibly adding bourbon red turkeys.

If anyone is interested I am selling the sulmtalers for $250 for the whole group (2 roos, 7 hens, 1 year old) or can split in two groups- (1 roo, 3 hens for $115) and (1 roo, 4 hens for $140).
I've been selling hatching eggs for $30/doz and chicks for $10 each, so you'd make your money back quickly

iPhones are so limiting. It's time to keep my camera near the door.

My father told me a hawk circled the coop today. The crows started making a racket and when he went outside the crew was hightailing it to the coop.
The emergency plan we practiced over and over worked!
Mobbing crows on a hawk or eagle can be your best friend when raising chickens. I love having them around.

Last night my grandma's Springer spaniel that her and her husband use for hunting, killed 2 chicks and one chicken, and she blamed it on my 9 year old sister because my grandma's dog wasn't tied up, even though anyone who owns some sort of hunting dog should know that it's going to try to chase kill and birds!!!!! And then she tried giving me some money! and I told her "No, I will not take your money".

Not always true.

I have 2 labs. They are trained to hunt. They are fantastic hunting dogs. The older one has been through all the doggy schools, the younger I trained myself.

They do not chase the chickens, they will hunt a grouse, or pheasant and retrieve a duck, but will not chase a chicken. Any dog can be trained to know what is "off limits".

Consistency is all that is required. My dogs are my chickens protectors from predators. When we are outside with them we "scold" them if they even sniff a domestic bird. What I worry about more than the dogs is the chickens becoming complacent towards four legged critters because of them being with the dogs.

NOW That does not mean you leave the dog without supervision for 15 hours alone with the chickens, but we do an hour or two with no worries. Besides a smart dog knows if the chickens are dead, they cannot drop those tasty treats the dogs like to eat (and I do not mean eggs).

As you can see the dog is not bothered or real excited about the birds.

The following picture is how I attempted to stop poop munching. It failed but would stop a dog from biting a chicken, but they could still chase them.

The reason it failed to stop the poop eating was because the dog is so smart. She figured out if you push the muzzle hard into the poop, it will squish through the muzzle and you can lick it off the inside of the muzzle.... sort of pureed poop. yummy!

Ok everyone, I still have 3 Marans rooster that have to go. Free of charge! They are handsome boys and well tempered thus far. P.m. me if you would like a free rooster or three
