Minnesota!

Sounds like the critters had a rough weekend - and the critter parents. So very sorry for everyone's losses.

Question

How do ya'll deal with 'that neighbor' who wants to raise a stink when a bird goes wandering? Not chickens or guineas but the occassional stroll by the 2 peacocks. Unlike chickens the peacocks don't tear up gardens etc -- they will walk through them and nab bugs and seeds but my boys - nor the birds of the woman where I got my guys - had ever been prone to tearing up anything in the garden - maybe an occassional leaf nibble for a taste then move along.

This neighbor has planted a 3 x 4 garden along the side of the their property - right next to the road. Not a lick of fencing surrounding it so it's wide open to deer, rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, foxes, raccoons, and anything that takes a notion to stroll through.

Yes I need my aviary built for the peacocks -- not denying that. Trying and can't seem to catch a freaking break with the better half's work schedule to allow us time to actually put the thing together.

Anyway - earlier in May neighbor thought it was wonderful that they boys came for a stroll to visit. I walked down and shoo'ed them home. Honestly I think they get turned around and can't figure out where the house is. Apparently they are following wild turkeys - we have them on trail camera eating with the turkeys. Looking for a hen. (another rabbit trail - my search for a flipping hen.... ) Then a few days later she called and said they were down there but now all of a sudden she claims they are tearing up her flowers and garden. I went back and got them - found no evidence of them in flowers nor garden. Counted over 200 deer track on the road between our driveway and theirs though...... (dirt road)

So I started confining them at night to the pole barn -- this did seem to work while their rut was at it's worst. Then for whatever reason (fireworks the night before?) they were down there again yesterday morning. This time her husband called - very threatening and declared they were had just returned from vacation and they birds were destroying the garden and his wife's flowers and he 'suggested' we come get them NOW and furthemore he'd shoot them if they were in the yard again.

When we got to their house the birds were 100 yards down the road - absolutely no sign of anything wrong with their garden -- and the garden is STILL unprotected from the local wildlife.

Legally I understand he is in his right if he perceives his property is being destroyed and there is nothing I can do if any of my animals were to wander over that way. I am extremely frustrated with the situation as these two refuse to believe the peacocks are not causing damage to their flowers or garden. They walk through mine daily - scooping up bugs and weed seeds. I've yet to see them attack a plant, scratch at a plant, or lay in a plant.

A large part of me wants to yell at him and say hey DA$ why don't you fence your beloved garden in if it's that big a deal. Also do you not know we've got 4 black bear roaming this road and you've got bird feeders in your flower bed? What kind of stupid are you? This isn't the city limits.....

I just had to vent. I literally spent yesterday trying to corral those two into a small enclosure to no avail. I watched their every move until they went up to roost in 'their' tree next to the back door. This morning we've pouring rain -- still can't get them into the pole barn - but the last I checked them they had burrowed under a trailer to get out of the rain.

I am so angry with the situation - do y'all know anyone who helps put coops/aviaries up? I'm to that point - getting the rest of my supplies and trying to find someone to do an aviary raising.

Sorry about the predator attacks Rhett's and holm.

Heidi's cream legbars originated from Greenfire farms she told me. I think the birds we got were hatched by her though.

This explains it..

Minnie I am sorry I semi-accused you of performing genetics experiments on the Creamettes..

I see where the problem is. The greenfire website says* their creamettes are 50% chicken and up to 50% of a combination of road runner and guinea fowl DNA, which explains why mine are all crazy and run like they do...

* or it does not say and I just made it up....

Mistabue, I have no idea what to tell you.

I saw my guineas in the neighbors yard yesterday, so I do understand. I figure if they shoot them, so be it. I hate their going there, I hate them being locked in a covered pen worse. I have guineas to eat ticks and bugs and they do a great job of that but keeping them locked up makes it impossible to do that.

I am bringing them a couple dozen eggs tonight to help offset any ill feelings if there are any.

My turkeys never go that direction or that far, they basically sit on the doorsteps here. Where ever I am they are. Big feathery dogs is what they are. Which is weird because I purposely try to not have a relationship with any turkey other than JJ and Ethel because I know I am going to take their heads eventually and eat them.

My Chickens have never crossed the road, but they stay in the yard where I feed them.

Did any of you that got the creamettes from Triplell get chicks this year, besides me? If so why have you been neglecting to post pictures of the chicks so I can compare them to mine?

Due to some issues I am selling all my young birds. Ducks and chickens. I have chicks ranging in age from 10 weeks to 1 day. At least 90% r from EE x Welsummer cross. Some other crosses to. I also have a few B/B/S cochin or maybe Cochin BA cross chicks that just started hatching. Right now I have 1 blue and more hatching. If u or anyone u know is looking for young pullets or cockerels let me know. I also have 2 full grown BR roosters for sale. This is the last thing I wanted to do today.

Sorry Holm! Wish I could help but I am over capacity and am needing to downsize soon! Sorry! Hope things start to go better for you soon!

Our turkey is still alive this morning. He was gone last night and I do not know where he slept but he showed back up around 9:30 this morn. We made him some eggs. I don't have antibiotics I can give directly to him, Minnie. I only have the water soluble kind. I will be making a run to town to get supplies so that will be on the list. I hope it won't be too late though. Not sure how easy it will be to administer that either. We shall see.

Mistah-Maybe you could put an ad on craigslist looking for help. I don't know. Find someone with teenagers and they can add that to their high school transcript for volunteer work. Sorry you have crabby neighbors. That is never easy.

Rhett, Maybe you could scramble some eggs and add the antibiotic into it even if it is water-soluble I think it would work in the eggs, just do not heat the antibiotic incase it is heat sensitive. I think water soluble just means you can use it in water not that you have to use it in water...

At least that's how I do it. I feed powdered probiotics dry over feed even though it says to mix in water and it seems to work. It makes the water yucky I think..

Sorry about your troubles Holm, Sorry I can't help you out either, I am over loaded on birds too.

Thanks Ralphie I had not thought of that. Well, I also would have a hard time keeping other animals from eating it. The turkey is not confined so any food or water I put out for him is accessible to the other turkey. I have a community food and water station that the ducks and geese and turkeys use. But I put a separate food and water on top of the brooder cage he likes to hang out on. I don't know if he is actually using the separate dish because I do see him use the community one (which is his normal feeding place) I suppose for the sake of the injured turkey I should not worry about the other one eating the antibiotic?

1000

Some of the chicks r in this pic from this morning. These r from this morning.

Thanks Rhetts and Ralph. I know lots of people have to many chicks this time of year.
