Minnesota!

Well if all is going well, I should have chicks hatching Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately I am headed up to Lake Vermillion for a bachelor party on Friday morning, so my DW will be alone with the kids keeping an eye on the hatching progress.

I have all my turkeys, chickens and guineas together as babies. I feed them game bird feed to start then go down to a lower protein. I think it is game bird grower which s 20 %.

I have never had a problem other that the toms and roosters fighting because they are Stoooooooopid. The turkeys get the short end of the stick in the rooster fight, but the turkeys want to start fights.

As of today I have most the baby guineas by themselves but the turkeys and chicks are still best friend. They hang together.

Ralphie, to answer your inquiry, Ed's brother has very short and blunt spurs. I have a Buff Chantecler rooster that has spurs of about 4 or 5 inches that are as sharp as a razor. Fortunately he is very docile and not inclined to use them.
I also have a White Chantecler with similar spurs, but he is also very mellow and not a threat.
I do keep these big guys separated. When there are attractive females around boys are inclined to spar to establish who is most deserving of affection and that causes problems.
The only rooster I have that has spurs and a personality disorder from time to time is a Gold Sebright. The little runt thinks he is as big as an Ostrich. He is more entertaining than threatening.

So cool! Are your hens hatching them?

I read today about an infestation of some sort of water fleas in Lake Vermillion.

My Copper Maran, Zeus, has pseudo-charged at me a couple of times when he believed one of his gals to be in distress. He'll back off when he's reminded how precarious the life of a rooster can be.

His "take care of the flock" attitude is to be commended.

Ed does the same thing, he makes lots of noise and comes at me. but not too close. He has decent size spurs 1 1/2 inches about. Longer than the turkeys and the other roosters. Ed is not a mean bird, his disposition is great, he never picks a fight, he lays with the chicks ( cand poults) and seems to watch over them. If I get one excited and it cries he is right there.

He is very patient with the 2 adult toms and takes a lot of guff from them before he unloads on them. Then they run away crying and bleeding.

The thing I like best about his is his attitude towards the girls. When he finds a "catch" of feed, worms, grubs or what ever he makes a strange series of noises and it almost sounds like " look what I found, Look what I found", and he waits for the girls to come and eat his find.

I am just curious about the roosters EJB kept because he said this was the bottom of the barrel and I think he is great. Definitely worth every penny I paid for him!... Unlike Ole, who was a PITA serial rapists.

Sorry to talk bad about your rooster Mistablue.....hehehehehhe

Hey all
How goes it? Well ya'll no I'm a chicken newbie so halp! I posted on another thread on the board but wanted to bring it to the homefolks for some sage advice please.

4-5 week old Americauna/Wyandotte cross. Saturday she was fine, yesterday the other chicks were running over her in the brooder - paralyzed and couldn't stand. Yesterday she was waddle walking - this morning she appeared to be drawing to one side. I had to leave to get vitamins, etc. Just dosed her with oral B12 and Nutri-drench.

Tonight she cannot stand at all however when picked up she has grip in her claws. She is laying on her side and will try to raise up when we check on her.

I have her separated from the remaining chicks (did that yesterday). So far none of them show any other symptoms. I did mix the B12 and electrolytes in water and that was given to the other chicks and sickly chick as well.

Do I need to dose her several times tonight with the B12 or one dose for the night? I will say she took the oral meds like a little trooper. Eyes are bright and she's alert. Scooted herself for water after we put her in a new set up (rubbermaid with paper towels so she has a rigid bottom to stand on should she recover from this.) Fixing some boiled eggs to mash up for her later tonight.

First time I've had this happen so I'm totally freaking out. Was gonna make a drink and had nothing to mix with the JD so opted for a beer. My nerves are shot.

Wow, I think I had 100 posts to read. I gave up!

Anyone know where to find some heritage turkey poults? Looking for purebred Standard Bronze, Narragansett, Blue Slate, Sweetgrass, or ??? Also a few Guineas if they aren't halfway across the state!

Our Meaties are coming this Thursday or Friday. We ordered 50 from Hoover's Hatchery in IA. Their chicken tractor is almost done :)

Gee Mistah I wish I knew something that could be helpful.. Sorry. Has anyone posted on your other thread any advice yet? I will try to find it and follow it.

Mike @gofeedthegirls I will try to take some duck pics for you tomorrow. Been crazy hectic here. I think of it off and on though and will get to it!!

Cyrus-sounds like a good time. You should have Ralphie on speed dial for your DW. He knows everything and could talk her through any problems over the phone that she might encounter.

Just advised that basically I did the right thing. Read up some mores - sounds like possibly there is a thiamine deficiency - which is in the B vitamins. Not sure how long it will take for her to bounce back.

I still can't believe I just gave a chicken oral meds tonight..... mercy
