They look more like my silver laced wyandotte than my barred rock. Very nice all the same.

@KlopKlop Actually, I LOVE splitting wood. And stacking it. And mowing lawn. I know how crazy that sounds but I get so much satisfaction getting work done. There is an endless supply of things to do but it doesn't scare me. Sick I know!

there is definitely satisfaction is a hard days work. I built a chalkboard in my workshop that hangs on the kitchen wall. DW writes her 'Hunny Do' list on it and there is also satisfaction in crossing items off the chalkboard too.

My mother-in-law is nuts about mowing the lawn. She comes out here all the time and mows our lawn, sometimes when we arent even home, because she enjoys it so much! thats fine with me. Thats 2+ hours a week i can spend doing better things

How long until she reaches market weight? I am assuming she is just feeding out on pasture, right? that should make for some cheap beef in your freezer!

Can I rant?

I went out to the garage to check the 7 chicks for feed, water, and temp for the night. Little Silkie was doorknob dead. This is the 2nd dead chick plus 1 sick chick in the last 14 days.

I know, I know, - buying chicks off Craigslist is a crap shoot -- but the seller still maintains she has no sick birds and has had no one report sick/dead birds to her.

My vet referred my call to the Board of Animal Health - regarding paralyzed bird. She's still not showing any sign of standing or not having the head draw - but she's an eating machine. Tonight her little crop was poofed out but good. She is laying against my chest, wrapped in 4 towels, and snoozing soundly after getting her grub on.

Anyway back to BoAH - he called this morning and we talked about this chick - he said he felt it was not AF. I didn't say anything about the 1st chick that I found dead because I figured it had decided to perform aerobatics and crowned itself against the heat lamp as the light bulb filament was broken (not bulb) and light was off when I found it. He did tell me to contact him should I have any birds drop dead or show any upper respiratory symptoms.

But it was sudden death - just like the Silkie.

I am peeved and pi$$ed and heartbroken at same time. If I've brought home something from the seller then I have potentially signed a death warrant for my guineas, my peacocks, and Ole & Lena.

The remaining 5 in the brooder are okay. Or they were 2 hours ago.

We wanted to see what a 1/2 highlander and 1/2 hereford would look and grow like. We may be interested in buying herefords or the like next year after we see how she is. We plan to raise her and breed her to the highlander bull the in laws have here. We would like to get a few steers for food and maybe the heifers would be good too. We shall see. But for now she is a keeper!

very cool! I think a couple cattle may be on our '5 year plan' we have 3 acres that we rent to the neighbor to farm for peanuts practically and we aren't going have plans to grow commodity crops ourself, so that is a real possibility.

You will definitely get more for your money by breeding her

This little herd of cattle has been in the talks for over a year. I am so excited it has worked out that we were able to start now and not later.
Growing up my dad rented our land to the local farmer he paid my dad after harvest. When I was a teenager we took the land back and started a little hobby farm. It was really nice.
