Minnesota!

OK... I think I have it all.

I did not get gone last night, so leaving soon. I hope. If I can get my DW out of bed.

Blanch after soaking in a brine and brown sugar I soak it in water for an hour to take some of the surface salt back out. I soak over night about 18-24 hours. I use a "floating egg" to test if I have enough salt. The brown sugar is a little trickier to get the right amount. What I do is start dumping brown sugar into the salt brine until my DW starts witching "Don't you think you have enough of darn brown sugar in there yet". ( a couple words there are changed to become G rated.)

Do not over soak on the clear water soak, hate to lose all that brine!

Lala I am picturing the run out the door. I bet we all have chickens that have seen us in undies or less. They never seem to judge though. I hope you get whatever got your bird, and sorry about the loss.

On bird naming. We seem to name the ones that look different and we can tell who they are, but that alone does not get a name, they need to have a"personality" also. In my case it is the brownish EE that will never get a name. I have too many that look all alike.

I think I am down to 4 adult guineas this AM, but who really knows or cares, They are like pet stones, unique to own but hard to really love. I sometimes wish all of them would get ran over, so my new ones do not have their bad habits.

I have 7 new keets, One had a hole in it for over 24 hours. I saw the guy was still alive, so I performed a C-section on the egg. The poor keet was so dry in there his leg was stuck to his belly. He was in a funny sideways position, I think they call it a breech baby. He is out and alive for now. My humidity has been between 55-65. I watch it close during hatching. Plus ambient humidity is 80% today and 70 yesterday.

My Mom is complaining about my guineas. She claims they are eating her potato leafs. I watched them in the garden. I assured her they were just eating the potato bugs. She disagreed and wanted to know if they were just eating the bugs why the plants were jerking and looking like they were being pulled.

I told her the bugs were just holding on really hard and the bugs were actually making the plants jerk not the guineas.

She wanted to know if that was the case, why does she only have 4 leaves on each plant.

I explained that just shows how bad her potato bug infestation was. She should be thanking the guineas for saving the few leafs they did!

BC do you birds eat much "purchased feed" this time of year? Mine do not, I have feeders of 16% layer feed hanging but they seem to ignore it. I give them scratch, but not that much and it lays on the ground for days.

Next question, And I assume this is for the guys only. When nature calls, I seldom go all the way into the house. When I find the proper place to relieve myself, I find chickens come running as if I am giving them a treat... It is so gross, your chickens drink urine too?

Have a great day. Not sure if I will be back until Monday (but I most likely will)

Chickening and chicken mistakes keep us humble that's for sure. Blue kote is a good thing to keep in the chicken first aid kit. I love themed chicken names. I started out with flowers and such: Lily, Rosie, petunia, Fern etcetera. But I thing any new ones I get I'm going to go for old country western singers: Patsy cline, Peggy Lee, and so on.

Sorry about the chicken raid LaLa. I've ran down to the coop in my underwear and sloggers. But regretted it immediately when the rooster came after my shocking white thighs one spring day. He was not appreciative of the glare in his eye.

One of the benefits of country life :) taking care of chickens in undies and rubber boots *lol*

Guineas eat potato bugs! Is there anything they don't eat?

We grow Yukon Golds but so far no bugs.

I used to not go through feed as much in the spring summer but I think Im up compared to other years and it's multi factorial.
1) bless her heart but the buckeye eats like a horse. She is about 7 or 8 lbs and 90% breast. Dual purpose bird.
2) my rooster isn't ranging out as much either due to heat or old age. He loves his spot on the north side of the house. Under the hydrangea bush waiting for me to come home and throwing a hand of scratch to get the chicken mafia out of my garage. I must say i'd rather have that than eating corn feed at the neighbors and loading up their cuddy back with photos of pampered domesticated birds than a 12 point Brofey buck. But if Roger could just go out a bit and look for raspberries and grass hoppers he'd be all the better for it. And stay on our side of the drive as well.
They love it after I mow the lawn and they go about picking off moths and eating the cut grass.

I'd say heat keeps them moving less for the most part. I noticed here the other day... We had a 70ish day and they were moving around the yard a bit more foraging. And then of course after the first freeze and bugs go crawling under rocks or into bark, we need more feed again.

GoFeedthegirls, you SO need a rooster and usually Craig's list is full of them-for free. But I'm sure somebody on here will have some extra Roos after all the chicks this spring.

It's not "bad habits", it's just the way guineas are (bat-crap crazy). If you have older ones or not, the young ones will act much the same without any thought or consideration for or from anyone.

eta: LaLa, sorry about your raid. I had a fox coming into my yard right around noon for a couple of days. I shot at him (missed, of course) and then kept the chickens locked up until afternoon for about a week. I don't think he's been back since then, at least I haven't lost any more chickens.

Last night I built a temporary chook tunnel from the coop to my fenced garden so that the chickens could go over and eat up all the weeds and bugs but with the crazy weather I didn't open the gate this morning.

I'm pretty sure we had lightening strike in the hayfield adjacent to the house this morning. That and torrential rains made for a fun drive into town for work
