What is so bad about a hen being broody? Other than being a PITA?

It is not bad, if I could get her to be broody somewhere other than my nest box. If she would let me move her, and she would stay with some eggs she could be broody for as long as she wanted.

This one refuses to be broody in a hidden/stolen nest like a normal chicken does. She wants to be broody in the nest boxes.

Check out this EE I received from McMurray. It looks like the blue laced red wyandottes I ordered as far as the red and blue coloring shades. But in EE form. Very pretty I think. I can't wait to see what she looks like in the coming weeks. They are 7 weeks now.





And here is one with the same coloring just lighter shades. Very interesting I think!

I was thinking of making mine 8ft wide. That should give me over 6 in the center. And by doing that, I can use 4 panels and almost not violate the ridiculous zoning rules.

I am making mine 10X10 and that gives me enough to clear the middle. Being short does have its advantages! That gives the birds more room. if I had longer 4X4s on hand, I would have made it wider. I got the base frame done and have the panels in place and stapled in. The turkeys helped me out by pecking at my pocket and my tool belt.

Coffee - I use 96 oz. heated dog bowls. The downside is that they poop in them and they need to be cleaned every day, but I take a clean bucket of water in and an empty, dump the old water in, splash a little clean, use a brush, rinse, dump, fill. It sounds like a lot, but I have 9 large pens and 4 bantam trio pens and it doesn't take long and one 5-gallon bucket pretty much makes it all the way through. I use the rubber pans for the ones I can do the dog bowls with and flip them and stomp out the ice and fill again.

I got enough panels and tarp and such to do 2 hoops. The first one is for the turkeys, but the second will go in a pasture paddock for the pullets that the boys are getting a little too randy with.

Well, I am back from the 'big city' with my youth group from our mission trip this week. We fed people meals through a homeless shelter and did other service projects. Very eyeopening stuff for these kids (6-8th grade). Now I am preparing to head out for my 10 year high school reunion. I will be ready to be home tomorrow finally! I have been missing out on Chicken TV and my dogs are just begging me not to leave again.
