Minnesota!

My Silkie roosters have made me wonder what that blue Silkie meat tastes like . . . then I look at their Muppet-like faces and all thoughts of Camp Stew Pot go out of my brain. Why are they so darn cute!?

Just an fyi Cyrus on the upside down carrying that they have no diaphragm muscle between their organs and lungs. So it really subdues them...basically because they can't breath.

The weight of the organs comes down directly on the lungs.

Football hold or a broom handle in the fluff is what Rog gets when he's feisty. Not hard Just a little jack to lift him off the ground a bit.

JJ is regularly picked up, held or carried football style. He has never challenged me, but I do it as a precaution. to remind him I am boss. Even my DW picks him up and pets him occasionally ( hence he is OUR turkey).

The roosters have never challenged me, BUT Ernie stood next to me the other night staring at me then et lose with a 900 decibel crow right into my ear.. I am think he wants to be carried around for a while too.

BC the amazing thing about electronic brains is they do not need to be turned on to work. HOWEVER< my dogs are smart enough to tell the difference if I do not have batteries in them.

They mind so well when I have it on them, and defy me when I don't ( on poop eating). Labs have a tendency to want to do what they want and will listen to you, if they want too. Especially my young one, the alpha pup of the litter. Never again will I have the alpha pup!

now he has a better idea of how much his "organ" weighs!

A few weeks ago I build a new set of nesting boxes for one of my pens. It is 2 rows high, 3 in a row. The boxes are more or less 11"x11"x11" with an angled lip on the front about 2" high. I am having recently issues with the birds kicking all the straw out of the boxes except 2 which I imagine is because there is a hen in them all the time since that is the only nice place to nest. So I end up adding more straw every day, but the same thing happens. I think this is causing traffic jams at egg laying time as I have been finding eggs on the floor near the nest boxes.

Do you think the boxes are too small? they are too bored? I just got a pile of milk crates for next to nothing and I'm considering turning them into nests and seeing if that helps. I can always use the wood boxes as a shelf in my shop.
I had the same problem and put in a 1x4 for the lip. It worked for me.

I think I will get one silkie next year. A mini big bird. What colors are there?

I, too, was having a little problem with the pullets kicking out the bedding and once in awhile an egg would go too. I was going to add an additional inch to the lip already there. However, the longer they are laying the less it is happening. But I still think I might add that extra inch anyway. Just as a precaution. I am finding that the newest layers are the ones who are more careless with the nest making.

I have a 4 inch lip on all mine and never had an egg kicked out, but all my nest boxes are pretty deep and they seem to make the nests at the far back of the box.

I think my edge is only 2 inches certainly not close to 4! Do your hens have trouble getting in the boxes or are they tall enough that there doesn't seem to be issues? I might go measure my opening and see what you guys think.
