I have been seeing those on facebook. Wish they were priced reasonably. I would get one.

Morning all!!
Well, my ocd could not handle the chickens sleeping in the nest boxes anymore. Some roost on the edge and some sleep in the box. Funny thing is they are all pullets that don't lay yet except for one. Drives me crazy every morning to find enormous piles of poo in my precious egg boxes!! If they wanted to roost on the edge with their behinds hanging off the outside that would be fine with me (maybe). Well, I resorted yesterday to hanging up a piece of roofing paper. It is heavy enough they can't move it and I can easily move it.
DH says to me last night "how long do you think before they learn not to sleep there and you can take that down" HHHmmmm.............How long do I think it will take the chickens to learn they can't sleep there anymore?? I don't know. Can chickens really learn that is off limits at night? Am I wasting my time trying to keep them out? Will they go right back to it once the paper is gone? Or is the paper a semi permanent fixture in the coop?
I figured I would come here to the experts for the answers.
Something odd to tell you too. Several days ago I kicked out the Brahma that was always hiding in my nest boxes. I put him in a small coop until I can figure out what to do with him. Well, yesterday I removed four 10 week old silver penciled rocks from the other coop since they were complete PITAS in there. I had no where to put them so I put them in with the Brahma. (26 weeks old) Wouldn't you know they are getting along right now? Boggles my mind really.
Have a happy Saturday!!
About how long do you think it would take for them to prefer sleeping elsewhere?I think it will work, once they start roosting higher up they won't want to go in there.
Ha!! I think coffee came out my nose on that one.....Blanch your point on atrophy is a good one. We are probably the only nation on earth that could be brought to our knees by terrorist opening a jar of peanut dust in a school ventilation system.
I have the same problem. I just clean out the boxes and use extra shavings so it is easy to get it all out with the pooper scooper, because we know. No one wants poopy eggs.Mine for the majority lay the eggs in the boxes. I am trying to break them of sleeping at night in there. Actually they take afternoon siestas in there too. Very frustrating!
That is a good site to learn about breeds. Thanks! If anyone is interested in rare chicken breeds,
Greenfire Farms is a cool place to look.
Now I'm going back to sleep.
I do that every morning too. I just feel like it is so wasteful that I am cleaning out 9 boxes of shavings every day! I find it super frustrating to see the hens sitting in there all stretched out sleeping when that is not what the boxes are for.I have the same problem. I just clean out the boxes and use extra shavings so it is easy to get it all out with the pooper scooper, because we know. No one wants poopy eggs.![]()
It has become part of my daily ritual when I am saying hi to all the ladies.
