Minnesota!

Ralphie, Jay still runs the place at Widdes, but his son is much involved as well.
I don't believe the Gray Wolf does a lot of damage to chickens in most cases. The brush wolf (coyote) and both types of fox are major culprits. The big wolves like bigger game with deer as a primary food source. I don't say they wouldn't take chickens or other fowl but that would be unusual?

Didn't you go to school today?  That is something new that is happening ;)

I'm homeschooled.

Well I managed to sell a female pekin to a lady who had hers go missing and her other duck needed a new friend. If knowone wants any more soon I will keep them and try to get some mule ducks or more pure pekins.

I would tend to agree, with you with the exception of an easy meal, if there is no energy to expend, I think they would take them. Also I would think a lone male that has been kicked out of the pack ( by his Daddy) would easily take chickens and ducks instead of trying to get a larger animal without a pack.

Looking at the picture Rhett took, that would be a REALLY large Coyote. A coyote is a fine boned to actually small canine. I think my Labs are larger that Coyotes by 30 pounds or so. Using a quarter as the measuring Unit. My dogs prints are only 2 1/2 to 3 quarters long.

I am still going with wolf. I think the Politically correct thing in this "time of the tree hugger" is to claim wolves can do no damage. (sorry Scandia, not trying to take a shot at you).

Even in Rhetts case they told her the calves that were killed were done by coyotes, (I think I got that right).

That is so great to hear Jay is still there, I was wondering about that.. I keep thinking of stopping in to see him on my trips north, but I hate to bother him, and I am normally on a tight time schedule. ( Read, Needing my Grandpa time!)

Those tracks to me look like a coyote or maybe a young wolf. I would think it would be more likely to be a young wolf than an old experienced one.

I would think if it is a coyote it would be a record size one, the tracks are almost 50% larger than a coyotes should be. IMHO.

A young wolf that has been banned from the pack for trying to move up the ranks too fast. Or a young one that stole a couple females and left. With the increasing wolf population that happens more often than before.

If anybody is up right now, ignore the coyotes and go watch the northern lights
I heard they were gorgeous early this morning. I wish I didn't require so much sleep. I was completely zonked out last night. Worn out. Not even night owling it like I usually do.

Here's some news out of the Brainerd Lakes area regarding a chicken coop and predatory domestic dog. Fun times down there in Crow Wing County. Oh boy. There's some bat crap crazy people out there.

Now you all see the wisdom of the three S's!

Had the chicken owner practiced the 3S's the chickens would be save from that dog and the dog owner would not be in jail. Now we are going to spends tons of tax payer money caring for him and trying him. Maybe even getting him an attorney.

In addition, if the arrestee is employed, he could lose his job, his family could go on welfare. If he goes to prison we house him. His wife could take up a "lover" for her needs. She could fall in love and a divorce ensues. Her lover's wife finds out and leaves her. The guy would realize he was just in lust and not love and now is family-less and become an alcoholic lose his job and end up on assistance and a road hazard when he drives drunk. (who knows how many he could injure or kill)

Both women are now without husbands and have young kids so they cannot work, We are stuck paying welfare, and they become reliant on the welfare treadmill. The tool to our state budget is soon in the millions!

SO

When in doubt always practice the 3S's, its good for the economy.

Back to the canine track,

I was thinking, I could be wrong, It would be the second time, so rare but possible, on it being a wolf.

I got the bright idea to measure the track,

I have a laptop with a touch screen. I blew the picture Rhett posted up, then covered the quarter in the picture with a quarter. I then measured the track. It is just a tad over 4 inches to the top of the toe. It is 4 3/4 inches to the tip of the toe nail. Way too large for anything but a timer wolf, I think.

Now the question is why is a wolf going after chickens. EJB brought up a good point about them wanting larger prey most often. Maybe just convenience shopping. like me at the gas station.

not sure but can somehow someone look this profile up ive seen his comments on other post and they are NOT GOOD he only has 6 forum post on BYC .... xXxtherealdave
