wouldn't you know that when I got home late last night, I had two hens sitting on eggs? what are they thinking?

I had to go to a tupperware party that my niece was hosting. Bought some stuff my daughter wanted but couldn't afford. She was sitting next to me so I could ask her what she wanted, since there wasn't anything I wanted or needed. Tupperware started in 1947!

Finally, first hard frost! I have to get that garlic in the ground this weekend.

I think we need a hoop coop raising team. A day once a month at someone's place who needs a coop. Everyone could help put it up, making short work of it, and get to see the chickens and other critters.

A hoop coop raising, during the warmer months could be fun! With all our extra time it would be a gracious gift to participate in but very community bonding.

Rhett,  I cannot believe a hoop coop is too cold.   I have no heat in my coops.  I try to get the moisture out, that is my concern.

I have an open front on the one coop.  It will remain open all winter.    Bert Sr. Stayed in an open coop all winter last year. I had a couple that lived in a box (wooden brooder) because I did not have enough coop space.    I do not believe the temp difference between Orrock and Palo is enough to make a difference in coop construction.

I think Bears would preclude you from having a hoop coop.  They would walk through one like it was paper.


KlopKlop  I am going to try and do three batches next year. Of course that could change.     You could always sell the extra birds.   I saw an ad on craigslist from the Mankato area selling CXs for $15 each.  I raised mine for $7.25 each. I think I got everything in.   The birds for sale on Craigslist were 4-5 lbs dressed, I know those cost way less than mine did.    You can't beat a CX for a luvable bird.


Rhett  I think you have the same animal on both photos. The dark part of the tail did not show on the top one.  I hate to say this, but I think that one is  coyote or like you said young wolf.  The legs look to fine (think) for a wolf to me.

It is a coffeeless morning.  I need to go to the Doc, and he gets so unreasonable when I have a pot or two of coffee before seeing him.

We have had several people ask about buying broilers from us while we sell eggs at the farmers market this year as well as some coworkers. We probably will raise up a few smaller birds next year for that purpose (4-6lbs dressed) as well as my parents and my in laws both are interested in a freezer load next year. Should make for a good year of broiler raising!

@duluthralphie I'm still waiting to hear your plans for broilers that you will start in March! How long will you keep them indoors? What will their outdoor accommodations be while it is still frozen/cold out?

Ralphie, I am not sure that anyone who uses one of those little one cup coffee brewing systems can be allowed as a member of any redneck organization, and then on top of that a preference for some "special Peruvian coffee". Are you sure that you have ever been to Togo or even know where it is?
I have been distracted for a few days with pigeon racing activities, but it is interesting to come back and have all of these entertaining posts to catch up on. Thank goodness my pigeons won me enough to cover their and chickens expenses for a year.

I should run some chicken tractors with some broilers next summer. You people have me wanting to do this now. As if I don't already have stuff to do already.

What a gorgeous fall morning. Nice and brisk with fog lifting off the pot holes and lakes. It was a cool drive out there this morning. And the woods are on fire. It was well after sunset last night putting chooks to bed...but it was like it was still light out there with the last bit of light from the sky reflecting off those golden leaves. Oh it was gorgeous. The chickens are in heaven with the cooler air, bugs on leaves coming down, cooked squash tailings. The only thing is the molt...but they seem to be doing okay. The BLRW and the BA are are a little slow. Roger's back is a mass of quills, and his tail is about gone. But he's in good spirits nonetheless with two or three layers still putting out eggs.

Rhetts. First picture looks like an adolescent wolf. Second looks coyote. I concur. Bears hibernate in the winter so a hoop coop would be disrupted only by an agressive wolf...but I think you could stake it in and cattle pannels are pretty tough. Reinforced with hardware cloth they'd be pretty indestructible. Not probably worth the effort if done right. Thanks for sharing the pictures. People get a nice idea what you're dealing with there. What a PITA.

Still working on potty training the obnoxious yellow lab pup. She insists on pooping downstairs in the basement. She's so sneaky and quick too. ugh. kennel kennel kennel kennel...... I'm sick of poop....

Congrats Ed on your winnings. That's awesome that your hobby is paying for itself. I have envy about that actually. LOL.

I too question the Keurig and how it fits into rednecking. Just not sure.... Unless you bought your keurig at a garage sale or something. LOL.

I love the Folgers Columbian made a little strong. And I have to admit I tried some beans we won at a NWTF Turkey banquet...Highlander Grog from Akalef. Mmmm. But coffee is just pretty much for weekends when we have some slow time around here.

I'm thinking they dark enough the others are laying in them. I try to get it cleaned up right a way but now I leave for work before she lays, and I know they are eating the yolk out of it. how do I stop that

I think all rednecks have single serve coffee brewers..

However, when I am in Togo I use an old coffee maker or. I put a put on the wood stove and wait all day for my coffee to get black enough.

I will most likely only get 25. I will get them in Mid-march as soon as the weather is decent, I will move them outside, either with or without a heat lamp in one of my "modular" brooders/tractors. If I had to I could raise them inside until May 1st, but what a pain that would be.

I will set up the brooder/tractor/pens in the building Sunday when the CXs no longer will have use for it,
