Here is Norman! He is 3 weeks old this Friday.

Adorable! Puppies, baby chicks, kittens, and Norman......this group is going to get me in trouble. I want one of everything.

Here is an updated photo of the duckling that my Rouen hatched out in August. What is that POUF on her head? It has been there the whole time and I assumed when the down fell out it would too and then fill in with feathers. Nope. It is a fluffy pouf. Some genetic defect? The only breeds it could be is Rouen or Kahki. I have one male and one female of each so she could have hatched out any combo of those two. I figure @Minniechickmama will know.

I was telling my co-workers this morning about how I put the eggs I'm incubating into lockdown yesterday. Then, I explained how I marked all of the air cells then was up all night monitoring the humidity and making sure all was well. Then, you have to watch the temp because of this and this and that and this. They looked at me like I went down the rabbit hole.

Non chicken people are so boring!


You're hatching eggs now? What kind of set up do you have to keep them warm for next 2 months?

Thanks Klop. Well, I didn't order specific breeds. I let the hatchery pick them out. I got Bourbon reds and I think these are the Eastern Wilds. I would have to go to Mcmurrays website to see for sure but they are not the meat Broadbreasted.

Heck yeah! I ditched the wood box for a styro bator and egg turner....fancy stuff nowadays. Truth be told, my son hatched some turtle eggs in our old wood bator last year for school. The thing is 20 years old - can't beat it. I remember my Dad making it when I was a kid. Back to the chicks, they'll stay in a 64 gallon sterilite tub for a few weeks and then off to a pen until they're feathered for the weather. They'll be hanging out in our heated garage....lucky little things. If the other girls knew they'd be staging a riot.

They actually did! That or they did a great job pretending. Then one asked what happened to our ducks. It's been years and years since we've had ducks. It's the thought that counts.

Sounds like there is a crest gene in khakis. You could breed this duck with a non created khaki and get more of them. But breeding crest to crest sounds like bad news https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/166400/crested-khaki-campbells-question-about-breeding
