Minnesota!

I have a question to those of you that sell BB turkeys.

What do you sell them for? How do you determine the price?

I am selling mine (1) to an independently rich person from the cities, does that figure in?

I figured all my input costs then added what I thought was a reasonable 'profit' for each, which really means labor and incidentals cost. I charged $3.25 dressed per pound. That included cost of buying poults, feed, processing, bedding. I also look at what grocery stores are charging so I don't set prices too high, or what I feel is too high.

So i met one of my neighbors down the road yesterday at the farmers market. I almost forgot about it, but i thought you guys would find it interesting. He is co-owner of a company that raises quail (3 different breeds) then they send them to Zoos, raptor centers, and other places like that with large predatory birds as food! how cool/unique is that! they euthanize the birds, freeze them, and ship them on planes from our regional airport. They have something like 3000 quail at any given time and hatch their own.

Maybe i can get some quail from his next year to add to our farm! I have been watching craigslist for a while for an old shed or something similar to use as the start of a pen.
Color me jealous, a little. I had talked to the folks at Eagle Bluff when I went with DD to see if that would be an avenue for getting rid of some of my excess cockerels. They said they already contract with other farms. I hadn't thought of the quail for that, but makes sense since they are game birds.

My wife is so contrary today.

I just do not understand women, I guess. I took off my coveralls last night and laid them nicely on the back of a recliner in the living room. Now when I am ready to go outside I asked if she knew where I had a pair of coveralls.

She replied " Here on the chair"

I said " no, those are dirty, they need washing."

She replied (censoring out the words that would get me kicked off here) "what are they doing on the chair?"

I said " waiting to get washed"

She said " how am I suppose to know that?"

I said. "It's your job to know"

She seems a little put off by this exchange. Any idea why?

Ralphie, if we seriously have to explain this to you, I am most certainly surprised that Judy hasn't broke out the cast iron skillet yet. I will give any DIL a 10" cast iron skillet for a wedding gift and tell her exactly how to use it. My DH knows I have 2, so he never does anything like that.
Just repairing things and having them repaired. Long story short. Taking care of a building.

So, you have been swindled and you don't get to pull the cord for the big whistle?

Today I had to put my old Aussie down. Paddy was 14. The vet came out to the house which was nice, he passed with all of us with him. He is the whitest dog second on left in my avatar. :hit

Aussie please accept my condolences on the loss of your dog. 14 years is a good amount of time.. Good amount to be a family member. I'm sure you've experienced this before but it doesn't get easier. But as bad as yesterday was, today will be no better. Tomorrow will be though and the day after as well. Find joy with your other dogs. It's about all you can do for now.

Coffee it is hard not to say stuff. This forum teaches you that though nonetheless. What thread was it? Sorry that happened to you. There are a lot of ornery self important people out there raising chickens. I find this thread the only sane one personally.

Ralphie coveralls on the chair means they have a few days wear left in them. Coveralls spray and washed in the laundry room means you are a loving conscientious well trained husband that understands wife has another full time job other than understanding complex male signals.

Got the plastic up on the run finally
