A couple of mine are down to quills in spots. They do look crazy. Hope they come out of it soon. I haven't had an egg from an EE in weeks and I have three. I may do the light bulb trick. Set it to come on at 2 and go off at 7?
My EE quit laying in october last year and didn't start until the spring. I think it is their breed. she lays like a champ all summer though, 5-6 eggs a week!

set it so it comes on early in the morning. Otherwise, the light goes off all of a sudden and its dark! they don't know what to do. So, evening comes and they go to roost, you are just waking them up early.

I find ee's are always early to quit laying and late to start again in the spring.

I don't mess with lights in the winter, at least not for the last decade or so. I did the first couple years. I usually have a few layers who are in their first year and they will still lay so I get a few eggs now and then.

I almost took a picture of Ed tonight, to post, but I was afraid someone would accuse me of mistreating him he looks so bad. He has hardly any feathers on his neck and no tail. Normally he looks regal, now he looks like a scruffy hobo.
One of my BAs is quite naked, her whole neck and back. We get her from a nearby farm mid summer and she came naked. i think they had too many roosters causing the feather loss. I am surprised to see that she has no new feathers coming in yet. several of the other BAs we got have naked butts too. will they come in before winter? I think they are last springs hatch. Im afraid i will need to get a chicken scarf knitted!

We spent some time playing with the kittens in the living room tonight. trying to get the dogs acclimated to them. Our hound likes them but our lab/pit is still anxious. Her absolute favorite thing is chasing squirrels and rabbits and some days i worry she will knock out a window when she sees them from inside. She nipped at one of them tonight a bit and that resulted in me taking her down and biting her neck then time out. after that and then a little heart to heart she was able to come out and lay nicely on the couch and watch from a distance. That gives me hope that she will eventually get comfortable with them, but it is going to be a long road. Im afraid if we dont work on it she will just end up running them off when they get outside.

The kittens are just getting to the playful age and love snuggling.
